Description

Registered Nurse - PCU (North Carolina, Charlotte)

Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Work on an intermediate care unit specializing in neurological and medical intermediate patients.
  • Patient ratio: 1 nurse to 4 patients; unit max census 24 patients.
  • Night shifts available: 12-hour shifts from 18:45 to 07:15, typically 3 shifts per 6 weeks (6 weekend shifts total).
  • Floating required to other intermediate and critical care areas.
  • Self-scheduling with final approval by staffing.
  • Orientation: 32 hours total (8-hour computer class + 2 shifts on unit).
  • Dress code: Navy blue and white scrubs.
  • Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start.
  • Strict call-off policy; no RTO (return to office) after booking allowed onsite.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in North Carolina
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU), with experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Certifications: ACLS and BLS issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Skills: Telemetry monitoring, ventilator (vent) management, and intravenous drips

Preferred Qualifications

  • Skills: Triage, intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring, conscious sedation, charge nurse experience.
  • Certifications: CCRN, TNCC, CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute).

Patient Population & Unit Details

  • Intermediate care with a neurological sub-specialty focus alongside medical intermediate patients.
  • Unit uses PYXIS, EPIC, and SBAR systems.

Scheduling & Shift Details

  • 12-hour night shifts (18:45 - 07:15).
  • 36 or 48-hour shifts can be offered.
  • Weekend requirement: 3 weekends every 6 weeks.

Compliance & Onboarding Requirements

  • Background checks including local, federal, national criminal, sex offender, and education verification.
  • Drug screening within 30 days of start (10-panel, negative result required).
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start; if past positive TB, physical within 30 days required.
  • Fit testing for N95 mask or completion of PAPR training (not required for non-clinical).
  • Immunizations and titers required: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B (with facility-specific declination if applicable).
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray per protocol.
  • Seasonal flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 10/31).
  • Must complete required facility-specific education modules and compliance training prior to start.
  • Must complete medication safety training and competency exams as applicable.
  • Must complete Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam with a minimum score of 82% within 72 hours of start.
  • Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Clinical Education Checklist if applicable.
  • Must sign confidentiality agreement and facility-specific job description prior to start.
  • Must obtain and upload a photo for badge creation (passport style, white background, business attire).

Additional Notes

  • Floating to other units is mandatory.
  • Strict adherence to call-off policy is enforced; excessive call-offs may lead to cancellation.
  • Candidates must be reviewed against unit description requirements.
  • Orientation includes both classroom and hands-on unit shifts.
  • Candidates must upload proof of completion for all required trainings and certifications.
