Registered Nurse - Correctional Facility

Location: Beacon, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 26 weeks

Job Description

• Provide nursing care in the Regional Medical Unit, including Emergency Clinic, Long Term Care, Unit for the Cognitively Impaired, and Infirmary.
• Responsibilities include medication administration, nursing assessments, patient intake and discharge, documentation, and other facility-specific tasks.
• Shifts available: Days, evenings, and nights.
• Typical shift length: Minimum 8 hours, may extend to 12 or 16 hours as needed.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State.
• Minimum of 1 year of correctional nursing experience, with correctional experience within the last year.
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.

Background and Screening Requirements

• Criminal background check with fingerprinting required; fingerprinting completed onsite.
• Background check includes Social Security trace, county searches, nationwide search, and sex offender registry.
• New York Statewide Central Registry (SCR) clearance required for tracking purposes.
• Drug screening: 9-panel test within 1 year of start date; instant tests accepted.
• Physical exam required within 1 year of start.
• Negative TB test or chest X-ray (Qgold, Tspot, or 2-step PPD) within 12 months prior to start.
• Annual TB questionnaire completion required.
• Vaccination or titer documentation required for:

  • Measles (Rubeola)
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Hepatitis B (vaccination, titers, or declination)
  • Varicella
• Seasonal flu vaccination or declination required for 2025-26 season.
• COVID-19 booster preferred but not required.

• The hiring process is subject to a state-run bid system, which may delay interview and placement timelines.
• Medicaid enrollment documentation is not required for this facility.
• Fingerprinting procedures and background checks are strictly regulated and must be completed as specified.

Shift Details

• Evening shift example: 5 days per week, 8 hours per day (14:00 to 22:00).
• Total weekly hours typically 40.
