Job Opportunity: Cath Lab Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Rochester, New York
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking a Registered Nurse with cath lab experience to work primarily in a scrub role (not operating fluoroscopy). The role functions similarly to a radiologic tech position. Candidates with RCIS certification are preferred but ARRT certification is not required.
Work Schedule
- 4 days per week, 10-hour shifts (7:00 AM – 5:30 PM)
- Approximately 8-10 call shifts per month, including 1 full weekend of coverage
Required Experience
- Minimum 2 years of experience in the cath lab
- Experience limited to Interventional Radiology (IR) only is not acceptable
- No prior travel experience required; first-time travelers are accepted
Required Certifications & Licenses
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in New York (no pending licenses accepted)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA provider/instructor/RQI acceptable
- BLS (Basic Life Support) – AHA provider/instructor/RQI acceptable
Required Skills & Competencies
- Mandatory competency in phlebotomy and IV placement
- Experience with a broad range of interventional cardiac cath lab procedures including but not limited to:
- Cardiac stent placement, diagnostic catheterizations (adult), IABP placement/removal, Impella insertion
- Left and right heart catheterization, pacemaker/defibrillator lead extraction/removal
- Percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI), angioplasty, pulmonary artery line/Swan Ganz monitoring
- Central venous access (non-tunneled/PICC and port placement), dialysis graft creation/revision/interventional
- Endovascular interventions, stent graft placement, upper and lower extremity angiography
- Procedural sedation administration and monitoring, infection prevention, dysrhythmia management
- Experience in both Cath Lab and Interventional Radiology (IR) Lab procedures required
- Familiarity with EPIC electronic health record system required
- Scrubs provided
Patient Population
- Cardiac patients requiring diagnostic or interventional cardiac catheterization
- IR lab patients requiring drains, tubes, kyphoplasty, biopsy, and other interventional procedures
Travel & Location Details
- No local candidates accepted within a 75-mile radius
- Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: keep RTO close to 1 week
Onboarding & Compliance Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID required
- 7-year criminal background check within 3 months of start, including SSN trace, national criminal, sex offender, and education verification
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 3 months of start and updated monthly
- Foreign education equivalency evaluation required if applicable
- Physical exam, fit mask test, negative TB test or chest X-ray, and various immunizations/vaccinations (Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella) required within 5 days of contract signing and updated annually as applicable
- Drug screening within 30 days of start
- Snellen eye exam within 1 year of start
- Facility-specific documents including photo for badge and pre-employment compliance attestations required
- Medication/pharmacology competency exams and other competency testing as required by profession
- References and employment verification required for some candidates
Additional Notes
- Candidates must have experience scrubbing in the cath lab but do not need to operate fluoroscopy
- RCIS certification is a plus but not mandatory
- The unit accepts first-time travel nurses
- Call shifts include approximately one full weekend per month
- Facility does not accept local candidates within 75 miles
Requirements / Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York
- Minimum 2 years of Cardiac Cath Lab experience, including experience within the last year
- Experience in Interventional Radiology
- ACLS certification
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience with Epic electronic health record system
