Job Opportunity: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Correctional Facility

Location

  • Rome, New York

Employment Type

  • Travel/Contract
  • Contract Length: 26 weeks (approximately 6 months)
  • Shift: Night shift, 5 days a week, 8 hours per day (10:00 PM to 6:00 AM)
  • Total Hours per Week: 40

Job Description

  • Provide essential healthcare services to inmates within a secure correctional environment.
  • Administer daily medications, including controlled substances, and ensure inmate compliance.
  • Perform clinical care duties such as taking vital signs, physical assessments, wound dressing, and health screenings.
  • Respond to medical emergencies within the facility.
  • Document inmate health data, updates, and treatments accurately.
  • Work under the supervision of an RN.
  • Maintain compliance with correctional health regulations and follow strict security protocols.
  • Work setting: In-prison medical clinic.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) license in New York.
  • Minimum of 1 year of LPN/LVN experience, with experience within the last year.
  • Experience working in a correctional healthcare environment.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

Required Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - American Heart Association or American Red Cross

Background and Screening Requirements

  • Must complete a state-run Criminal History Form before starting; clearance can take up to 4 weeks.
  • Criminal background checks required within 1 year for the last 7 years of locations lived/worked/schooled.
  • 5-year criminal background check within 6 months of start, including SSN trace, county/state/national criminal searches, and sex offender registry.
  • Fingerprinting required onsite on the first day of orientation; new fingerprints required if there is a gap of 6 months or more between assignments.
  • Sex Offender Registry Search required within 6 months prior to start.
  • Work history verification for the past 5 years required; facility accepts work attestations.
  • Two professional references required.

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start.
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (Qgold, Tspot, or 2-step PPD) within 12 months prior to start; annual TB renewal required and may be completed onsite.
  • Annual TB questionnaire completion required.
  • Vaccination documentation or titers for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (vaccination, titers, or declination)
    • Varicella
  • Drug testing: 9-panel within 1 year of start; instant tests acceptable.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or declination documentation required to meet standard requirements (not required by the facility).
  • COVID-19 booster preferred but not required.

Additional Important Information

  • In-person interview required at 3 PM Monday through Friday; phone or online interviews are not permitted.
  • Candidates must be patient with the background clearance process.
  • Dress code: Comfortable shoes, no metal items, no dark green or camouflage clothing; scrubs color not specified.
  • No cell phones or purses allowed on site; clear bags provided for lunch.
  • Report time on the first day is 8 AM.
  • Parking available near the water tower.
  • Must bring a valid driver’s license or government-issued ID on the first day.

This position requires working in a secure correctional environment with strict adherence to safety and security protocols. Candidates should be prepared for the unique challenges of providing healthcare in this setting.
