Description
Registered Nurse (IR)
Location: Bronx, New York
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Day: 12
Hours per Week: 34
Job Summary
- Work primarily in Interventional Radiology (IR) on the 1st floor with occasional assignments in the Cath Lab (8th floor) for vascular procedures.
- Manage patient care across all three phases of IR procedures: pre-procedure, intra-procedure, and post-procedure.
- Perform IV insertions and CT preparations for scheduled patients.
- Collaborate closely with physicians and mid-level providers regarding patient care plans and disposition changes.
- Use Allscripts EMR for documentation; some paper charting depending on procedure modality.
- Participate in unit-specific orientation (minimum 3 shifts) with manager evaluation for additional support.
Patient & Procedure Details
- Average 5-8 IR procedures per day.
- CT prep and IV starts for approximately 50 patients daily.
- Procedures include biopsies (breast, thyroid needle aspiration), embolizations, thrombectomies, drains (abscesses, pleural effusions, abdominal fluid), pain management injections (spine, shoulder, hip, knees), and line management (Permcaths, PICCs, ports, tunneled catheters, chemo ports).
- Work alongside a CST IR tech and an in-house IR physician during the day; on-call after 5 PM.
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) — mandatory even though pediatric experience is not required
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 1 year of experience in Interventional Radiology nursing.
- Proficient in IV starts.
- Critical care experience is a plus but not required.
- Open to first-time travel nurses.
- No prior travel experience required.
Work Environment & Scheduling
- 12-hour night shifts with one 1-hour lunch and two 15-minute breaks.
- Flexible scheduling; travelers should be prepared to fill gaps in permanent staffing.
- No call responsibilities on weeknights, weekends, or holidays; permanent staff cover call.
- No floating outside IR and Cath Lab IR-specific cases.
- Scrub color: Royal Blue; surgical or disposable scrubs allowed in Cath Lab.
Team & Support
- 7 RNs staffed in IR.
- Charge nurse coordinates scheduling and assists with patient care as needed.
- IR tech support provided by CST from Radiology Department.
- IR Chair and another MD present during the day; on-call coverage after hours.
Additional Notes
- Documentation follows Radiology Flowsheet standards.
- Patient monitoring includes sedation cases and pacemaker patients.
- Emphasis on communication and teamwork within the IR department.
