Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse

Location: Lafayette, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 12 weeks


Job Summary

Seeking a Labor and Delivery RN with at least 2 years of experience. First-time travelers are accepted. This role requires working day shifts with 3 twelve-hour shifts per week (6:00 AM – 6:30 PM), totaling 36 hours weekly.


Unit & Patient Care Details

  • Float required to Maternal-Child Health (MCH) unit.
  • Patient ratios generally follow AWHONN guidelines:
    • 1:1 for active labor
    • 1:2 for non-active labor
    • 1:3 for triage or antepartum patients
  • May be required to take additional patients during high census.
  • Care includes labor, induction, scheduled and unscheduled C-sections (including with salpingectomy), SROM, PPROM, hypertension, preeclampsia, antenatal and triage patients.
  • Use of specialized equipment: CADD epidural pumps, Alaris IV pumps, Phillips wired and wireless monitors, Periwatch, Steadys, Hillrom labor beds, Draeger radiant warmers, vein light, and v scan.

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • Indiana RN license must be active and in hand prior to start (pending licenses not accepted).
  • BLS (AHA or RQI accepted)
  • ACLS (AHA or RQI accepted)
  • NRP (AHA NRP only)
  • FHM (Fetal Heart Monitoring) certification

Work Requirements

  • Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays.
  • Locals are not accepted for this position.
  • Guaranteed hours vary by shift pattern:
    • 3 shifts of 12 hours = 36 hours/week
    • 4 shifts of 12 hours = 48 hours/week (optional)
    • 8 or 10 hour shifts also possible with 40 hours/week guaranteed.

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • Background check required within 90 days of start, including 7 years of residence/work history, SSN trace, county/state/national checks, and education verification.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start.
  • Education verification and transcript/diploma required (may be pending at start if needed).
  • Drug screen: Negative 10-panel drug test within 12 months of start.
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start.
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start (N95 or approved respirators).
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • TB test (PPD, QuantiFERON, or T-SPOT) within 1 year
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
    • Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
    • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap strongly recommended
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/30–3/31)
  • Color blind testing (Ishihara or equivalent) with 100% minimum score required.
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam and unit competency exam required.
  • HIPAA and facility-specific compliance forms must be completed prior to start.

Experience & References

  • Valid RN license in Indiana.
  • Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience, with experience within the last year.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing required.
  • BLS issued by American Heart Association.
  • ACLS certification.
  • NRP certification.
  • FHM (Fetal Heart Monitoring) certification.

Additional Notes

  • Indiana RN travelers will not be allowed to work at this facility after 11/30/2024, except for Perioperative/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers.
  • This is a short-term acute care facility with approximately 194-210 staffed beds on various units.
