Job Opportunity: Surgical Room RN - Medical Center

Position Overview

• Role functions as Surgical First or Second Assistant to the surgeon for complex and basic operative or invasive procedures.
• May perform responsibilities of a Surgical Technologist if required, but preferably not simultaneously while functioning as first assist.
• Primarily focused on Orthopedic surgery but requires strong skills across multiple specialties including Robotics (XI), Neuro, General, ENT, and Vascular.
• Patient types include Neuro/ENT, Orthopedic, General (Breasts/Plastics), Vascular, Laparoscopic, General Oncology, Genitourinary (GU), Gynecology (GYN), and Robotics.
• Strong background in Robotics required; candidates without this background are not trained unless staying for more than one contract.
• Patient ratio is 1:1.

Location & Facility

• Level III Trauma Center with Level III NICU.
• Magnet Designation and Primary Stroke Center.
• 21 OR beds.
• Charting systems used: EPIC, Alaris, Pyxis.
• Free parking available; detached lot for day shifts, attached lot for evening shifts.
• Food options on campus include Starbucks and cafeteria.

Contract Details

• Contract length: 13 weeks.
• Employment type: Contractor.
• Shift: 8-hour evening shift.
• Hours per week: 40.
• Start date requires at least 5 weeks lead time for onboarding.
• Orientation lasts 2 weeks, including education, general OR, orthopedic, neuro, and urology training.
• Floating: Cross-trained to all Main OR specialties and Urology center; no floating to other hospitals.

Scheduling & On-Call

• Variable start times between 5:30 AM and 7:00 AM for day shifts.
• No weekend rotation for day shifts.
• On-call requirements:

  • General/Neuro: AM call slots Monday-Friday (3-5), weekends (1-2), PM overnight call slots (5-8) on an 8-week schedule.
  • Orthopedic Surgical Assistants: 1 day per week Monday-Thursday, plus 1 call weekend every 5 weeks.
• 30-minute response time required for on-call.
• Holiday scheduling options include working 4 ten-hour shifts or normal hours with unpaid holiday time off.

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Wisconsin.
• First Assist certification with a minimum of 2 years of experience, including experience within the last year.
• BLS certification.
• Associate of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing.
• Experience in Neurology, ENT Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and Vascular Surgery.

Additional Information

• Scrubs provided by hospital; scrub caps allowed but must be covered by a surgical bouffant.
• Support available on unit includes Charge Nurse, Leads, and Supervisors.
