Description
Registered Nurse - Pediatrics (Travel/Contract)
Location: New Brunswick, New Jersey
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 19:00 - 7:30)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Float pool position covering Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (no chemo/infusions), pediatrics, adolescents, newborn nursery, and Special Care Nursery (SCN).
- May also take Med/Surg assignments across various areas including PICU, NICU, and Pediatric Emergency Department.
- Patient ratio approximately 1:5.
- Weekend schedule: every other weekend.
- Block scheduling is not approved.
- Locals are accepted.
- Time off requests must be submitted with application and approved before offer.
- Must have experience with IV pumps, pulse oximeters, cardiac monitoring, IVs, TPN, G-tube, trach tubes, central lines, Foley catheters, NG tubes, respiratory treatments, transfusions, and pre/post-op care.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in New Jersey.
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing.
- Minimum 1.5 years of Pediatric Medical-Surgical nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year.
- Pediatric nursing experience.
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Current PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- IV Certification.
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID and valid driver’s license required within 48 hours of contract signing.
- Employment application or resume with 7 years of work history.
- Two professional references within the last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference.
- Background check within 30 days of start, including alias checks and multiple national/statewide databases. No open cases allowed.
- Drug screen (10-panel urine) within 30 days of start.
- Physical exam within 12 months of start, confirming ability to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease.
- Negative TB screening (blood or skin test) within required timeframes; additional clearance if history of positive TB.
- Immunization and titer requirements:
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: Positive IgG titers or documented vaccinations.
- Varicella: Positive IgG titer or 2 vaccines.
- Hepatitis B: Positive surface antibody titer or compliant vaccine series/declination.
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap within past 10 years.
- Seasonal influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually.
- Respiratory medical clearance and on-site fit testing mandatory prior to start; must be updated annually.
- Color vision testing required if job tasks involve color discrimination.
- Latex allergy screening questionnaire required if applicable.
- Completion of annual education sign-off and facility-specific training modules prior to start.
- Pass/fail competency exams required within 72 hours of signing, including:
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam
- Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (required for critical care and telemetry units)
- IV Therapy/Infusion exam (not required for OR specialties)
- Candidates must complete required assessments within 48 hours of receipt and have up to 3 attempts to pass. Failure after 3 attempts results in cancellation.
Additional Notes
- Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers are accepted.
- Floating between multiple pediatric and related units is expected.
- Must comply with all facility-specific policies including floating policy and annual education requirements.
- Time-sensitive documents such as fit test questionnaire and personal information sheets must be submitted promptly to avoid delays.
- Candidates switching between sites within the same employer with less than 30 days gap may have some documentation accepted from prior assignments.
This position offers a dynamic pediatric nursing experience across multiple specialty areas in a hospital setting, ideal for RNs with pediatric float experience and required certifications.
