Description
Job Opportunity: Critical Care Float Nurse
Location: Madison, Wisconsin
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Work Schedule
- Night shifts, 3 shifts per week
- Shift hours: 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM (12-hour shifts)
- Every other weekend and some holidays required
Unit Experience
- Experience working across multiple ICU units including:
- Neuro ICU
- Cardiothoracic ICU
- Burn ICU
- Trauma Surgery
- Experience with IMC/Progressive and General Care populations
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Wisconsin
- Minimum of 1 year of Critical Care Float experience within the last year
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Experience with Intermediate Care (IMC)/Progressive care populations
- Experience in Neuro ICU
- Experience in Cardiothoracic ICU (CTICU)
- Experience in Burn ICU
- Experience in Trauma care
Compliance and Background Requirements
- Background check within 90 days prior to start, including:
- Social Security Number trace
- County and nationwide searches
- Sex offender registry
- Wisconsin Caregiver Screening and BID Form required within 90 days of start
- Education verification as applicable (for RN, standard nursing education verification applies)
- Drug screening required per standard clinical candidate protocols
- Physical exam and immunization documentation per facility standards (see Health Documents below)
Certifications and Testing
- BLS and ACLS must be current and issued by AHA
- Telemetry testing:
- Adult Telemetry Test required, assigned and completed through facility LMS system
- Must meet passing criteria (80% overall, 100% lethal rhythms, and 3rd degree heart block questions)
- Up to 3 attempts allowed with remediation after 2nd failure
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exams as applicable
- Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment required
Health and Immunization Requirements
- Tuberculosis (TB) testing: IGRA blood test or two-step skin test within required timeframes
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella): 2 doses or positive titers required; medical or religious exemptions accepted with proper documentation
- Varicella: 2 doses or positive titer required; medical or religious exemptions accepted
- Hepatitis B vaccination series or declination form required if providing direct patient care
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually during flu season (Sept-April)
- Other vaccines as applicable (e.g., Meningococcal for certain departments)
Additional Facility-Specific Requirements
- Photo for badge must meet specific criteria (passport-style, solid background, no headwear except for religious/medical reasons)
- Completion of communicable disease form within 90 days of start
- Signed acknowledgment of pass/fail testing for Telemetry exam
- Skills checklist and employment application required annually or as specified
- References: 2 clinical references within last 3 years (Aya standard)
Summary
This travel contract position is for an experienced Critical Care Float RN with strong ICU background, licensed in Wisconsin or holding a compact RN license. The role requires night shifts with 12-hour durations, working across multiple ICU specialties and progressive care units. Candidates must be certified in BLS and ACLS (AHA), pass a telemetry competency exam, and comply with extensive background, health, and immunization requirements.
