Description
Med Surg RN
Overview
- Contract role
- 36 hours per week
- 12-hour night shifts
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Wisconsin
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- BLS
- NIHSS
- Med Surg / Telemetry experience within the last year
- 1 year of Med Surg / Telemetry experience
Preferred
- ACLS preferred
Unit Details
- Medical-surgical unit
- Average census: 20–22 patients
- Mostly geriatric patients
- Level IV trauma center
- 28 beds on the unit
Clinical Experience / Skills
- Experience with cardiac, neuro, and general medical patient types
- NG tube placement and management
- Foley placement and management
- Chest tube management
- Pleurex and other drain management
- Wound care
- Central line, port, and midline blood draws
- Cardiac rhythm interpretation
- May titrate Cardizem, amiodarone, heparin, Lasix, and insulin within set parameters
Ratios
- Day shift RN ratio: 1:4–5
- Night shift RN ratio: 1:6–7, occasionally up to 1:8
Scheduling
- Every-other-weekend rotation
- May be placed on low-census call for up to 36 hours per contract
- 50% of holidays per contract
- Schedule is built in 6-week increments
Floating
- May float to other MedSurg areas or to MedSurg patient assignments elsewhere in the hospital, including ER hold and ICU
- Will only take MedSurg patient assignments
Orientation
- Facility orientation included
- One 12-hour shift on the unit
Support
- Charge RN has a reduced assignment
- HUC until 2300
- Phlebotomy available for peripheral lab draws
- RT available 24/7
- Hospitalist available 24/7
- OT/PT/ST available during the day
- Centralized tele monitoring with tele techs and a central monitor at the nurse’s station
Equipment
- Alaris IV pumps
- Pyxis medication dispensing
- Lifts available, including ceiling lift
Dress Code
- Solid-color professional scrubs only
- No graphics, logos, denim, or designs
