Correctional Registered Nurse
Job Overview
- Travel/contract role in Rome, New York
- 26–52 week contract
- Night shift: 4x10 hours, 6:00 PM–8:00 AM
- In-person interview required
- Work setting is an in-prison medical clinic
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in New York
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Any nursing experience except Home Health, Hospice, School Services, within the last year
- 1 year of experience in any nursing setting except Home Health, Hospice, and School Services
- ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- BLS - Basic Life Support issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Competency exam required for all candidates
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam required for RNs
- 5-year work history verification
- 2 references
Screening and Clearance
- State criminal history form must be cleared before start
- Fingerprinting required
- New York sex offender registry search required within 6 months prior to start
- Background checks required, including criminal history and fingerprint-based screening
Health Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 12 months prior to start
- Drug test within 1 year of start
- Measles, mumps, rubella, hepatitis B, and varicella documentation or titers
- Flu documentation required
- COVID-19 booster is preferred, not required
Role Responsibilities
- Provide direct nursing care to incarcerated individuals
- Administer medications, including controlled substances
- Take vital signs, perform physical assessments, dress wounds, and conduct health screenings
- Respond to medical emergencies
- Document health data, updates, and treatments
- Support nursing care planning and interdisciplinary care coordination
Additional Notes
- Experience in medical-surgical, ambulatory care, or mental health is preferred
- Must be able to work with a diverse offender population
- Facility-specific first-day instructions include bringing a driver’s license and wearing comfortable shoes
