Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - Labor & Delivery (L&D) - Contract

Location: New York, NY
Unit: Labor & Delivery


Position Summary

Provide safe, competent, quality nursing care to patients and their families in the Labor & Delivery unit. Utilize nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver care based on Relationship Centered Care and nursing process.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs using critical thinking.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare team on care plans.
  • Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Manage assignments within Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Role model Relationship Centered Care practices such as Admission Welcome, Bedside Shift Report, Purposeful Hourly Rounding, Medication Review, and Discharge Wrap Up.
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to understand patient perceptions of care.
  • Address patient/family concerns and escalate as needed.
  • Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, patient-centered care and identify barriers to quality.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills essential to patient safety.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects and evidence-based practice activities.
  • Follow institutional protocols to avoid high-risk behaviors and ensure safety.
  • Document nursing practice accurately to support quality initiatives.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate with management to ensure adequate supplies and staffing.
  • Escalate resource deficits appropriately.
  • Use cost-effective approaches to patient care resources.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.

Professional Development

  • Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Advance clinical competence from novice to expert.
  • Maintain a professional image and communicate with empathy and respect.
  • Incorporate ethical principles in decision-making.
  • Engage in lifelong learning, scholarship, and innovation.
  • Participate in shared decision-making through councils and committees.

Requirements

  • Licensure: NYS Registered Nurse (RN) license required
  • Certifications: BLS, ACLS, Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) required
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 2 years RN experience
    • Minimum 2 years Labor & Delivery experience
    • Travel experience preferred but not required for per diem positions
  • Education:
    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
    • Associate degree considered with relevant experience or active BSN matriculation
  • Skills:
    • EPIC electronic health record experience highly preferred
  • Unit Details:
    • Average census: 12 patients
    • Unit beds: 18
    • Staffing ratio: 1-2 patients per nurse
    • Schedule: 3 shifts of 12 hours

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
