Registered Nurse - Emergency Department (ED)

Location: New York, NY
Specialty: Emergency Department (ED) - RN


Job Summary

Provide safe, competent, quality nursing care to patients in the Emergency Department, applying nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement patient care plans.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver patient care using Relationship Centered Care principles and nursing process.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs; apply critical thinking in care management.
  • Integrate assessment and intervention skills in nursing care delivery.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team on care planning and evaluation.
  • Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, discharge planning, and delegation.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and care team members.
  • Manage assignments within Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Role model Relationship Centered Care through admission welcome, bedside shift report, purposeful rounding, medication review, discharge wrap-up, and team collaboration.
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to understand patient perceptions of care.
  • Address patient/family concerns and escalate as needed.
  • Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.
  • Support staff in evidence-based patient care practices.
  • Conduct Purposeful Hourly Rounding addressing key patient needs.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, patient-centered care; identify and escalate barriers to quality.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills essential to patient safety.
  • Implement process improvements based on evidence and institutional standards.
  • Participate in peer and institutional review processes.
  • Collaborate on quality improvement projects and nursing research.
  • Contribute to compliance with quality and safety measures.
  • Apply high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors.
  • Report safety hazards following institutional protocols.
  • Document nursing practice accurately to support quality initiatives.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate with leadership to ensure adequate supplies and inventory.
  • Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
  • Use patient-focused, cost-effective approaches to resource management.
  • Document thoroughly in compliance with regulatory and legal standards.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.

Professional Development

  • Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Advance clinical competence from novice to expert level.
  • Maintain a professional image and communicate with empathy and respect.
  • Apply ethical principles in decision-making.
  • Promote lifelong learning, inquiry, and innovation.

  • Participate in shared decision-making through councils and committees.

Requirements

  • Current New York State RN License
  • Certifications: BLS, PALS, ACLS, TNCC
  • Minimum 2 years RN experience, including:
    • 2 years Trauma Level II & Pediatric ED experience
  • Travel experience preferred for travel positions (not required for per diem)
  • EPIC electronic health record experience highly preferred

Unit Information

  • Average Unit Census: 17 patients
  • Unit Beds: 24
  • Staffing Ratio: 1 nurse to 2 patients
  • Schedule: 3 shifts of 12 hours each, weekends required

Contract Length

  • Approximately 13 weeks (89 days ≈ 13 weeks)
