Job Description
As a Clinical Nurse in the CSICU, you will provide safe, competent, and quality nursing care to a designated group of patients and their families. Your role will be grounded in nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice, focusing on critical cardiac care.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Deliver patient care using Relationship Centered Care principles and nursing process.
- Assess and evaluate patient needs, applying critical thinking in care management.
- Integrate assessment and intervention skills specific to cardiac surgery patients.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to develop and evaluate care plans.
- Prioritize patient care activities including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
- Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Manage assignments within a Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.
Patient Experience
- Role model Relationship Centered Care practices such as Admission Welcome, Bedside Shift Report, Purposeful Hourly Rounding, and Discharge Wrap Up.
- Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
- Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
- Use evidence-based practices to understand and improve patient perceptions of care.
- Address patient and family concerns promptly and escalate when necessary.
- Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.
Quality and Safety
- Practice safe, patient-centered care and identify barriers to quality.
- Demonstrate clinical skills essential to cardiac patient safety.
- Participate in quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
- Follow institutional protocols to escalate safety hazards or gaps in best practices.
- Document nursing care accurately to support quality and performance improvement.
Operations
- Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
- Coordinate supply and inventory management with nursing leadership.
- Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
- Promote cost-effective and patient-focused use of resources.
- Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
Professional Development
- Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Advance clinical competence from novice to expert level.
- Maintain a professional image and communicate with respect and empathy.
- Apply ethical principles in decision-making.
- Engage in lifelong learning, scholarship, and innovation.
- Participate in specialty practice councils, nursing committees, and unit initiatives.
Qualifications
- Current New York State RN License required.
- BLS certification required.
- Minimum 2 years RN experience, including at least 2 years in Post Open Heart and Cardiac Care Unit.
- Travel nursing experience preferred but not required for per diem roles.
- EPIC electronic health record experience highly preferred.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate Degree in Nursing considered with relevant experience or active BSN matriculation.
Work Schedule & Unit Information
- Unit: Cardiac Surgery ICU with an average census of 26 beds.
- Staffing ratio: 1 nurse to 2-3 patients.
- Schedule: 12-hour shifts, including weekends.
Contract Length
- 13 weeks (approximately 3 months).
