Description

Registered Nurse (RN) - Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (CSICU) - Contract

Location: New York, NY
Employment Type: Staffing - Supplier Sourced
Shift: Night shift, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM, 11.5 hours per shift, 3 days per week, every other week schedule


Job Summary

Provide safe, competent, and quality nursing care to patients in the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (CSICU) using evidence-based practice and nursing theory. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. Support patient and family education, promote health, and ensure smooth transitions of care.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver nursing care based on professional practice models and nursing process.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs using critical thinking.
  • Integrate assessment and intervention skills in care delivery.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team to develop and evaluate care plans.
  • Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Manage assignments within Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Facilitate patient-centered care activities such as bedside shift reports, purposeful hourly rounding, medication reviews, and discharge wrap-ups.
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to improve patient perceptions of care.
  • Address patient and family concerns promptly and escalate as needed.
  • Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, efficient, patient-centered care and identify barriers to improvement.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills essential to quality and safety in cardiac surgery patients.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
  • Follow institutional protocols to identify and avoid high-risk behaviors.
  • Document nursing practice accurately to support quality and performance initiatives.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate supply and inventory management with nursing leadership.
  • Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
  • Promote cost-effective patient care resource utilization.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
  • Maintain thorough and compliant documentation.

  • Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Advance clinical competence from novice to expert level.
  • Demonstrate professional communication and ethical decision-making.
  • Encourage lifelong learning, inquiry, and innovation.
  • Participate in specialty practice councils, nursing committees, and unit initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 2 years of Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) experience, including experience within the last year
  • Coronary Care Unit (CCU) experience
  • One year or more of total travel nursing experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Additional Information

  • Unit average census: 26 beds.
  • Staffing ratio guideline: 1 nurse to 2-3 patients.
  • Schedule includes weekends.

Contract Length

Approximately 14 weeks (96 days).
