Description
Registered Nurse - Surgical Specialty
Location: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Employment Type: Registered Nurse - Direct Care
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts, 36 hours per week
Job Summary
Provide nursing care under general supervision to patients with a range of health problems from simple to complex on a medical/surgical unit. Care includes pre- and post-surgical patients, some requiring stepdown/PCU level care.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage an assigned group of patients, including documentation of patient responses and changes in physician orders.
- Assist physicians with examinations and minor diagnostic procedures.
- Monitor physiological data and intervene as necessary.
- Administer medications, intravenous infusions, and blood products.
- Deliver competent patient care and communicate care plans to patients and families.
- Make referrals for patient care needs and delegate tasks to support staff.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Oklahoma
- Associate of Science in Nursing or Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program
- Minimum 1 year of Med Surg nursing experience within the last year
- Experience in an inpatient setting
- Acute care experience
- Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience
- Experience caring for patients with tracheostomies
- Experience caring for patients with ostomies
- Experience caring for patients with nasogastric tubes (NGT) or double lumen hemodialysis catheters (DHT)
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or higher from a board-approved program.
- Experience with ENT and/or transplant patients.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, techniques, and procedures.
- Ability to organize, plan, coordinate, and evaluate nursing services.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to respond effectively to cultural and language needs of patients and visitors.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to maintain good working relationships with colleagues.
Patient Ratios
- Surgical patients: 5:1 ratio
- Stepdown area: 3:1 ratio
Additional Information
- This position will not accept candidates with only operating room (OR) experience.
- Some patients will require stepdown care.
This job does not require prior travel experience.
