Job Summary

The Surgical Technologist supports the surgical team before, during, and after surgical procedures. The role is responsible for preparing the operating room, maintaining a sterile field, providing surgical instruments and supplies, and assisting surgeons and other members of the surgical team throughout procedures.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare the operating room and surgical equipment for scheduled procedures.
• Set up sterile fields, back tables, and Mayo stands according to procedure requirements.
• Perform surgical hand scrub, gowning, and gloving according to established protocols.
• Maintain strict aseptic technique and sterile field throughout procedures.
• Pass instruments, supplies, and equipment to surgeons and surgical assistants.
• Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team during procedures.
• Perform accurate sponge, needle, and instrument counts before, during, and after procedures.
• Assist with patient positioning, skin preparation, and surgical draping.
• Prepare and handle surgical specimens according to facility protocols.
• Operate and assist with surgical equipment such as electrosurgical units, suction, cautery, and surgical lights.
• Assist with room turnover and prepare the OR for subsequent procedures.
• Clean, disinfect, and maintain the operating room and surgical equipment.
• Assist with instrument decontamination and proper handling of reusable instruments.
• Maintain appropriate inventory of surgical supplies and equipment.
• Follow infection prevention, patient safety, HIPAA, and facility policies.
• Participate in surgical time-outs and verification of patient, procedure, and surgical site.
• Communicate effectively with surgeons, RNs, anesthesia staff, and other members of the surgical team.
• Respond appropriately to emergency situations within the scope of practice.

Required Skills & Experience

• Previous experience as a Surgical Technologist in an operating room setting.
• Knowledge of sterile technique and surgical procedures.
• Ability to perform 1st and/or 2nd scrub responsibilities.
• Strong knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment.
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced OR environment.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Certifications & Licensure

• Surgical Technologist certification such as NBSTSA/CST, if required by the facility or state.
• BLS – American Heart Association, if required.
