Registered Nurse (Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring)

Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Unit: Neuro Acute 6NNA/B
Unit Size: 48 beds total (including 10 epilepsy specialty rooms)
Shift: Days
Hours: 12-hour shifts (7am–7pm), 36 hours per week
Contract Length: 13 weeks minimum


Job Overview

  • Care for patients with epilepsy, brain tumors, subdural hematoma, scoliosis surgeries, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and other neurological diagnoses.
  • Manage 24-48 hour Trend EEG monitoring.
  • Work in a teaching hospital environment with nursing students.
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4 (days and nights).
  • Charge nurse role available (no patient assignment).
  • Resource RN available during day and night shifts.
  • Nurse aides (PCTs) support: 1-2 on days, 1 at night.
  • Floating assignments may include MedSurg/Telemetry units and other campuses.
  • Weekend requirement: 3 shifts every 4 weeks (self-scheduled).
  • Holiday work included in rotation based on unit coverage.
  • Scrub color: Grey’s Anatomy / Steel.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Minimum 2 years of core experience in MedSurg/Telemetry or Neuro Acute specialty.
  • Level 1 Trauma experience required.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Certified in Med Surg/Telemetry preferred.
  • Cerner EMR experience required.
  • Prior travel experience required for Neuro ICU or ED.
  • Must pass Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts).
  • Must pass Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab (skills include Foley catheter insertion, central line dressing changes, lifts, restraints, wound care).
  • Strong critical thinking and assessment skills required, including ability to detect subtle patient changes and assess cranial nerves.
  • Must have natural hair color and no facial piercings.
  • Male candidates must be clean-shaven for fit testing.
  • Travel teams must have their own vehicles.
  • Must comply with a 50-mile radius rule for travel.

Orientation & Onboarding

  • Floor-specific orientation: 2 shifts on the Neuro Acute unit.
  • Weekly orientations held on Mondays (except holiday weeks).
  • Onboarding paperwork must be completed by 1pm CST Wednesday before start date; incomplete files will delay start.
  • Day 1 includes a pass/fail SIMs Lab focusing on sterile technique and nursing competencies.
  • Failure of Dysrhythmia Exam results in a 6-month disqualification from assignments in the region.

Work Environment & Support

  • Teaching hospital with nursing students present.
  • Hospitalist or intensivist available in-house during day shifts.
  • Respiratory Therapy (RT) available 24/7; RT manages BiPAP ventilators.
  • Pharmacy services available 24/7.
  • IV team (SWAT RN) available for difficult IV sticks.
  • Parking assigned with shuttle service to the facility; night shift parking in garage.

Additional Notes

  • Use of self-releasing Velcro seat belts (not restraints).
  • MedSurg/Telemetry RNs with strong skills will be trained in neurological assessments.
  • Facility enforces strict appearance and conduct policies.
  • Contract length minimum is 13 weeks; shorter contracts will not be considered.

This position is ideal for experienced Neuro Acute or MedSurg/Telemetry RNs with strong assessment skills and prior travel experience who are seeking a challenging role in a high-acuity neurological monitoring unit.
