Description
Registered Nurse - CVICU
Location: Asheville, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Information
- Unit: Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) / Heart Step-Down / Progressive Care / Cath Lab Recovery
- Number of Beds: 16
- Patient Ratios: Typically 2:1 or 1:1; occasionally 3:1 depending on acuity
- Staffing: RNs only (no unit clerks or patient care techs)
- Scheduling: 36 hours per week, 12-hour shifts, alternating weekends
- Floating: Travelers float to all areas
- Documentation System: Cerner
- Equipment: Ventilators, Telemetry, Baxter IV Pumps, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP), Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT), Impella, Hypothermia equipment
Job Description
- Care for patients requiring ECMO, LVAD, and cath lab recovery
- Experience with titration of vesicant medications, pressors, sedation, and paralytics
- Skilled in ventilator and tracheostomy care, telemetry interpretation
- Understanding of hemodynamics and pulmonary artery catheter setup and interpretation
- Experience with transvenous pacing, cardioversion, transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), chest tube insertion and maintenance
- Procedures performed on unit include cardioversion, central line insertion, EGD, bronchoscopy, chest tube insertion, pericardiocentesis, thoracentesis
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) experience
- CVICU experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Experience with titration of vesicant medications
- Experience with sedation and paralytics
- Experience with ventilators and tracheostomy care
- Understanding of hemodynamics
- Pulmonary artery catheter setup and interpretation
- Experience with transvenous pacing
- Experience with cardioversion
- Experience with transesophageal echocardiography (TEE)
Preferred Skills and Certifications
- Experience with IABP, Impella, and CRRT is highly desirable
- Familiarity with advanced cardiovascular support and critical care procedures
Additional Information
- Orientation includes a 4-hour hospital orientation followed by an 8-hour floor shift
- Tobacco use is prohibited on all campus properties, including personal vehicles in designated parking areas
- Unit culture emphasizes advanced technology and experienced staff
- Patient care requires high acuity skills and the ability to work independently in a specialized cardiac ICU environment
This position is ideal for experienced critical care RNs with strong cardiovascular ICU skills seeking a travel assignment.
