Location: Puyallup, WA
Unit Information
- 9 Labor and Delivery Rooms (LDR)
- 2 OB Operating Rooms (OR)
- 2 OB Post Anesthesia Care Units (PACU)
- 11 Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) beds
- 4 Pediatric beds
- 20 Mother/Baby unit beds
- 18 bed START unit for Perinatal Addiction
- 3 OB Emergency Department Beds (20 weeks and above)
Job Details
This position requires a minimum of 1 year of experience. First-time travelers are welcome to apply.
Patient Types & Common Diagnoses
- Level II Perinatal Center for patients 32 weeks and above
- Common conditions include hypertension, magnesium administration, medication management for substance abuse, and a high volume of low-risk patients requiring intermittent monitoring.
- Procedures include epidurals, fetal monitoring, IV management, and Pitocin administration.
- Provides antepartum care including ongoing fetal monitoring.
- Post-labor care for stable patients and babies transitioning to the mother/baby unit, with 32-34 week infants directed to NICU.
- Approximately 175-200 deliveries per month.
Patient Ratios
The facility adheres to AWHONN and NANN guidelines:
- 1:1 for active labor
- 1:2 for non-active laboring patients
Required Qualifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license
- BLS Certification
- NRP Certification
- Fetal monitoring certification (AWHONN or Relias module)
Skills Required
- Strong experience in labor and delivery, including cervical examinations and antepartum/labor care.
- Proficient in amnioinfusion, epidurals, fetal monitoring, IVs, and Pitocin management.
- Experience in post-partum care for mothers and infants beyond the transition period of the next 24 hours.
- Basic knowledge of breastfeeding practices.
- Comfortable with couplet care once mother and baby are stable.
- Experience with HUGS Security system and Pyxis medication dispensing.
Department Support
- No CNAs are available on the unit.
- Surgical Technicians available Monday to Friday from 0600 to 1500 (gradually being phased out).
- Phlebotomy services are accessible.
- NICU specialists available for cases under 34 weeks, as needed.
- Respiratory Therapy is available 24/7 for high-risk deliveries or concerning fetal monitoring cases.
- Hospitalists and OB/GYN laborists available 24/7.
Technology & Equipment
- Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system: EPIC Stork, GE Centricity
- IV pumps: Alaris
- Medication dispensing: Pyxis (prior experience required)
- Patient monitoring systems available
Orientation & Scheduling
- Orientation includes two shifts on the unit:
- Shift 1: Patient deliveries
- Shift 2: C-sections and triage
- Annual core competency training required, including HIPAA and OSHA training.
- Scheduling: Weekend rotation every other weekend, with a three-week scheduling cycle.
- No on-call shifts required.
- Holiday expectations include one major and one minor holiday.
