Description
About the Position
This role is focused on providing exceptional care for patients during labor, delivery, and the postpartum period. The unit supports a Level II Perinatal Center and caters to a wide range of patient needs.
Facility Overview
Location: Puyallup, WA
Type: Level III Trauma Center with 375 licensed beds.
Unit Information
- 9 Labor and Delivery Rooms
- 2 OB Operating Rooms
- 2 OB PACUs
- 11 Level II NICU Beds
- 4 Pediatric Beds
- 20 Mother/Baby Unit Beds
- 18 Bed START Unit for Perinatal Addiction
- 3 OB ED Beds (20 weeks and above)
Patient Demographics
The unit primarily handles:
- Patients at 32 weeks gestation and above
- Conditions such as hypertension, substance use management, and general labor progression
Workload & Ratios
Approximately 175-200 deliveries are performed monthly with patient care ratios following AWHONN and NANN guidelines:
- 1:1 for active labor
- 1:2 for non-active laboring patients
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in Labor and Delivery
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification
- Fetal Monitoring certification (AWHONN or Relias module)
Skills Needed
- Proven Labor and Delivery experience, including cervical exams, antepartum and labor management, amnio infusion, and epidurals
- Fetal monitoring and IV administration, including Pitocin
- Post-partum care for both mothers and newborns
- Basic breastfeeding support and couplet care
Department Structure & Support
- No CNAs on the unit; Surgery Techs available weekdays from 0600 to 1500
- Phlebotomy services available
- NICU specialists on-site for infants 34 weeks gestation and below
- Respiratory Therapy available 24/7 for high-risk deliveries
Technology & Equipment
- EMR: EPIC Stork, GE Centricity
- IV Pumps: Alaris
- Medication Dispensing: Pyxis (experience required)
- Patient Monitoring Systems
Orientation & Scheduling
New hires will undergo a comprehensive orientation, including completing annual core competencies and unit-specific assessments.
- Weekend rotation: Every other weekend
- Shifts: 0700 to 1900 or 1900 to 0700
- Holiday expectations: One major and one minor holiday
