Unit Information
The Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is a fast-paced and challenging environment specializing in cardiac care. This unit accommodates:
- Number of Beds: 30
- Number of Staff: 65
- Typical Staff Composition: RNs and Patient Care Technicians (PCTs)
- Patient Ratios: 1:4; can vary up to 1:5
Shift Information
Available shifts include:
- Day Shift: 1 Charge RN, 5-8 RNs, 2-4 PCTs
- Night Shift: 1 Charge RN, 5-8 RNs, 2-3 PCTs
Equipment and Technology
The unit is equipped with a variety of advanced medical equipment, including:
- Television and transport monitors
- Suction and feeding pumps
- Tracheostomy care equipment
- Bipap and CPAP machines
- Heated high-flow oxygen systems
- Chest tubes and foley catheters
- Pacer wires, intravenous pumps, and sequential compression devices
Qualifications
Applicants must meet the following qualifications:
- Minimum of 1 year of current acute care PCU experience
- Current BLS, ACLS, and NIH certifications
Preferred qualifications include experience in:
- Chest tube management and removal
- Oxygen management (BIPAP and heated high-flow)
- Administration of drips such as heparin, diltiazem, amiodarone, Lasix, dobutamine, milrinone, and ketamine
Key Responsibilities
Typical procedures performed in this unit include:
- Post-cath care for heart catheterizations, TAVRs, ablations, and pacemaker implantations
- Post-thoracic surgery care for VATs/RATs, lobectomies, and chest tube management
- Pre and post-operative care for open-heart surgical patients, including CABGs, MVRs, AVRs, and aortic dissection repairs
- Post-operative care following vascular surgeries
