Registered Nurse (RN) - Stepdown Unit (Contract)

Job Summary
Provide safe, competent, quality nursing care to a designated group of patients and their families, based on nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care
- Deliver care using Relationship Centered Care principles and nursing process.
- Assess and evaluate patient needs; apply critical thinking in care management.
- Integrate assessment and intervention skills in nursing care delivery.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare team on care plans.
- Prioritize patient care including teaching, rounding, coaching, discharge planning, and delegation.
- Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, transitions, health promotion, and disease prevention.
- Communicate professionally with patients, families, and care team members.
- Manage assignments within Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.
Patient Experience
- Role model Relationship Centered Care through admission welcome, bedside shift report, purposeful rounding, medication review, discharge wrap-up, and collaboration with physicians.
- Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
- Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
- Use evidence-based practices to understand patient perceptions of care.
- Initiate service recovery and escalate concerns as needed.
- Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.
- Support staff in evidence-based patient care practices.
- Conduct Purposeful Hourly Rounding addressing key patient needs.
Quality and Safety
- Practice safe, patient-centered care; identify and escalate barriers and improvement opportunities.
- Demonstrate clinical skills essential to quality and safety.
- Implement process improvement strategies and participate in peer/institutional reviews.
- Collaborate on quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice, and nursing research.
- Contribute to compliance with quality and safety standards.
- Apply high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors.
- Escalate safety hazards following institutional protocols.
- Document nursing practice accurately to support quality initiatives.
Operations
- Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
- Coordinate supply utilization and inventory with nursing leadership.
- Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
- Practice cost-effective patient care resource management.
- Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.
Professional Development
- Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Advance clinical competence from novice to expert.
- Maintain a professional image and communicate with respect and empathy.
- Incorporate ethical principles in decision-making.
- Promote lifelong learning, inquiry, and innovation.
- Acquire knowledge and skills relevant to role, specialty, and community health needs.
- Participate in shared decision-making through councils, committees, and unit initiatives.
Qualifications
- Current New York State RN License
- BLS Certification
- Minimum 2 years RN experience, including 2 years in cardiology, telemetry, or VAD care
- EPIC experience highly preferred
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred; Associate degree considered with relevant experience or active BSN matriculation
- 1 year travel experience preferred for travel positions (not required for per diem)
Contract Length
- Approximately 9 weeks
This position offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic stepdown unit, providing specialized cardiac and telemetry nursing care within a collaborative interdisciplinary team.
