ICU Registered Nurse (RN) - Contract

Location: New York, NY

Job Summary

Provide safe, competent, and quality nursing care to ICU patients based on nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement patient care plans while prioritizing patient-centered care and safety.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver care using Relationship Centered Care principles and nursing process.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs, applying critical thinking in care management.
  • Integrate assessment and intervention skills in nursing care delivery.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members on care planning and evaluation.
  • Prioritize patient care activities including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and care team members.
  • Manage assignments within Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Role model Relationship Centered Care practices such as bedside shift reports, purposeful rounding, medication review, and discharge wrap-up.
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to understand patient perceptions of care.
  • Address patient and family concerns and escalate as needed.
  • Demonstrate caring, respect, empathy, and active listening.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, efficient, patient-centered care and identify barriers to quality.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills essential to patient safety.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects and evidence-based practice activities.
  • Engage in peer and institutional review processes.
  • Follow high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors.
  • Escalate safety hazards according to institutional protocols.
  • Document nursing practice accurately to support quality initiatives.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate supply and inventory management with nursing leadership.
  • Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
  • Use patient-focused, cost-effective approaches to resource utilization.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.

Professional Development

  • Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Advance clinical competence from novice to expert level.
  • Maintain a professional image and communicate with respect and empathy.
  • Apply ethical principles in decision-making.
  • Promote lifelong learning, inquiry, and innovation.
  • Acquire knowledge relevant to role, specialty, and community health needs.
  • Participate in shared decision-making through councils and committees.

Qualifications

  • Current New York State RN License
  • BLS and ACLS certification
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience, including 2 years in critical care or telemetry
  • EPIC experience highly preferred
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred; Associate degree considered with relevant experience or active BSN matriculation
  • Travel experience required for travel positions (not required for per diem)

Unit and Schedule Details

  • Average Unit Census: 8 patients
  • Staffing Ratio: 1 nurse to 2 patients
  • Schedule: 3 shifts of 12 hours each, every other weekend, variable shifts

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
