Job Opportunity: Family Birthing Center Nurse (Labor & Delivery, Mother/Baby)
Location: Carmichael, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Overview
Seeking experienced Labor and Delivery nurses for a travel contract in a Family Birthing Center setting, covering Labor & Delivery and Mother/Baby antepartum/postpartum care. Candidates must be able to manage all aspects of delivery, including "catching the baby," which is highly preferred especially for night shifts.
Requirements
- Specialty: Family Birthing Center (L/D, Mother/Baby)
- Experience: Minimum 2 years in Labor and Delivery nursing (highest required)
- Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- STABLE (preferred)
- Advanced Fetal Monitoring (copy required at submission)
- AWHONN and NIH certifications mentioned as part of the description
- Licensure: Active California RN license
- Prior Travel Experience: Not a first-time traveler; prior travel experience required
- References: Two supervisory references required (one within 12 months, one within 3 years)
Unit Details
- Unit: Family Birthing Center - Labor & Delivery and Mother/Baby
- Patient Ratios:
- Labor & Delivery: 1:2
- Delivery: 1:1
- Mother/Baby couplets: 1:4
- Typical Patients: Term, preterm, some high-risk, and antepartum population
- Hospital Designation: Baby Friendly with excellent breastfeeding support
- EMR System: Cerner
- Shift Details:
- 12-hour shifts starting at 6:45 AM
- Report at bedside
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday rotation with core staff
- Self-scheduling available but finalized by manager
- Overtime and extra shifts available
- On-Call: 30-minute response time if placed on call
- Floating: Possible mid-shift float to other Sacramento facilities (rare)
- Orientation: 1-2 days floor-specific orientation with preceptor
Additional Information
- Team Structure:
- 2 RNs in OR for C-section (1 for mom, 1 for baby), both circulate
- Charge nurse role available, generally does not take patients but covers breaks
- Nurse aides available as census dictates
- Skills: Ability to read and interpret EKG strips required
- Support Services:
- Hospitalist or Intensivist in-house
- Respiratory Therapy 24/7
- Pharmacy 24/7
- Equipment: No ventilators on unit
- Scrub Color: Provided
Important Notes
- Candidates must not have been employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI or Dignity) within the past year, though PRN employment through outside firms is considered.
- Travelers must be able to "catch the baby"—this skill is highly preferred, especially for night shifts.
- The unit will not consider first-time travelers.
Cancellation and On-Call Scenarios
- On-call/standby shifts have specific pay and cancellation policies, including compensation for call-back hours and cancellation codes.
- If placed on call for part of a shift, it counts as a cancellation unless the traveler works additional shifts to offset.
- Low census (HC) notifications typically occur 90 minutes before shift start changes.
- Full 12-hour shifts canceled are paid at on-call/standby rates until max cancellations are reached.
This position is ideal for experienced Labor and Delivery nurses with prior travel experience who are comfortable in a fast-paced Family Birthing Center environment and possess the required certifications and skills.
