Job Opportunity: Family Birthing Center Nurse (Labor & Delivery)

Experience & Certifications Required

• Minimum 2 years of Labor & Delivery experience (highest required years of experience)
• Active California nursing license
• Required certifications:

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • STABLE Certification
  • Advanced AWHONN (Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses)
  • Advanced Fetal Monitoring (AFM)

Job Details

• Unit: Family Birthing Center
• Beds: Labor & Delivery (4), Mother-Baby (8)
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • Labor & Delivery: 1:2, 1:1 during active delivery
  • Mother-Baby: 1:4 (couplets)
• EMR system: Cerner
• Charge Nurse role available (generally does not take patients, assists with break relief)
• No nurse aides on unit
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend

  • Night shifts: Friday, Saturday, Sunday
  • Day shifts: Saturday, Sunday
• Holiday schedule: Rotate with core staff; must work 2 of the 3 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's)
• Scrub color provided
• Telemetry and ventilator patients: No
• Hospitalist or intensivist coverage during the day; OB and anesthesia on-call at night
• Respiratory Therapist available 24/7
• Pharmacy hours: 0630-2200 with on-call pharmacist support after hours
• Shifts: 12-hour night shifts (1845-0715)
• Schedules posted 6 weeks in advance; no self-scheduling but can make themselves available for extra shifts and trade shifts with others
• No floating outside of L&D or Mother-Baby units
• Floor-specific orientation: 2-3 days with preceptor
• Typical patient load: Approximately 45 deliveries per month, including term, preterm, and couplets; no high-risk patients (transfers for mothers <34 weeks gestation)
• Staffing during deliveries: 2 RNs and 1 RT present
• Common diagnoses: Standard L&D cases, general gynecology patients, newborns on IV antibiotics or short-term oxygen

Additional Notes

• Must be strong in emergency situations and able to work independently, especially during night shifts when fewer resources are available
• Closest sister hospital is approximately 1 hour away
• Prior travel experience is not explicitly required
