Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Charlottesville, Virginia
Facility: University of Virginia Medical Center


Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse

  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: Nights
  • Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Schedule: Every other weekend (Friday, Saturday) and every other holiday
  • Unit: Postpartum/Antepartum with float required within skill set, including NICU to care for level II nursery patients
  • Electronic Health Record: Epic required

Required Certifications & Licenses

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • VA nursing license (pending submissions accepted)
  • Additional certifications may be required based on unit (e.g., ACLS, PALS, CHEMO, TNCC, EFM) – verify with recruiter or program manager
  • Ability to approve 40 hours of RTO (Return to Office)

Job Responsibilities

  • Clinical review and auto offer process
  • Provide nursing care in postpartum and antepartum units
  • Float to NICU for level II nursery patient care as needed

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

Background Checks

  • 7-year criminal background check within 60 days of start, updated annually
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM checks within 30 days of start, updated every 30 days
  • HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start, updated every 30 days
  • Education verification through a 3rd party vendor (BSN preferred; ASN required if no BSN)
  • Virginia-specific fingerprinting and child abuse registry checks for certain units (e.g., Behavioral Health, Unit 5 East)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands, updated annually
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination (no exemptions allowed)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (2-step PPD or Qgold acceptable; Tspot not accepted)
  • Annual TB questionnaire if past positive
  • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required (no declinations accepted for measles)
  • Hepatitis B: Positive surface antibody titer required or negative surface antibody and antigen titers (no declinations/exemptions)
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines or titer required (declination accepted but will not hold clearance)
  • Drug testing: 10-panel screen including marijuana and fentanyl, within 2 months of start and updated annually
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required annually (no exemptions or declinations accepted)

Facility-Specific Documents & Requirements

  • Professional appearance guidelines acknowledgment
  • Release authorization form
  • TB screening form
  • Traveler compliance acknowledgment
  • Fit testing acknowledgment (if patient-facing role)
  • Latex allergy questionnaire if applicable

Competency & Testing

  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Pass/fail cardiac rhythm assessment during orientation for adult inpatient RN and Mother-Baby units (not required for NICU, Pediatrics, Behavioral Health, Oncology, etc.)

References & History

  • Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
  • Performance and internal evaluations if previously employed with the system over 1 year
  • Completed employment application/resume
  • Skills checklist updated annually for applicable units

Additional Notes

  • Candidates can submit applications with a pending Virginia nursing license.
  • Floating within skill set, including NICU care for level II nursery patients, is required.
  • Epic experience is mandatory.
  • Some certifications and background checks are unit-specific; confirm with recruiter or program manager.
