Job Opportunity: ICU Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Chesapeake, Virginia


Position Overview

Seeking a Registered Nurse with strong neuro ICU experience for a travel/contract role in Chesapeake, VA. The area offers outdoor activities and is close to Virginia Beach and Norfolk.


Contract Details

  • Length: 13 weeks
  • Shift: 3x12 or 4x12 hour shifts (nights, weekdays, every other weekend, float, holidays)
  • Overtime: Available after 48 hours on 4x12 shifts
  • Float: Must be willing to float to Stepdown Unit; may also float to ED/MedSurg for ICU patient care

Licensure & Certifications

  • License: VA or Compact RN license required at time of application (no exceptions)
  • Certifications:
    • BLS (American Heart Association)
    • ACLS (American Heart Association)
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required
  • Other: Must be EPIC proficient

Experience Requirements

  • Specialty: ICU with strong neuro experience (post-neurosurgical, EVD, stroke care)
  • Years of Experience: 3 years critical care experience preferred (strong candidates without 3 years may be considered)
  • Prior Travel Experience: Preferred but not required

  • Patient ratios: 1:2-3

  • Neurosurgical and post-stroke
  • Respiratory failure

  • Post-surgical

  • Sepsis and MODS
  • Heart failure and post-cardiac catheterization

Compliance & Background

  • Zero tolerance for any license or background issues
  • 7-year criminal background check required (within 1 year of start, updated annually)
  • Government-issued photo ID required for verification
  • Fingerprinting required (Virginia VSP National Criminal Background Check) starting 1/1/2026
  • Drug screen: Negative 10-panel within 12 months of start
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, updated annually
  • Fit test for N95 mask required annually (PAPR not allowed)

Additional Requirements

  • Pass/fail EKG/medication competency testing at orientation (80% minimum, one attempt only)
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
  • Orientation safety manual acknowledgment
  • Job description and unit-specific skills checklist required
  • Proof of 2 references
  • Complete employment application/resume
  • Various immunizations and titers required or accepted with declination forms:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (required for some units)
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella titers or declinations
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required annually
  • COVID vaccine preferred but not required

Local Rules

  • Candidates residing less than 50 miles from the facility will not be accepted
  • Driver’s license must be provided for address verification prior to offer acceptance
