Description
Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Stepdown/PCU)
Location: Springfield, Illinois
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Shift: 3x12 hour nights (1845-0715), option to accommodate 4x12s if preferred
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Experience Required: Minimum 1 year in specialty (first-time travelers not accepted)
- License: Must have an active Illinois RN license (no pending licenses accepted)
- On-call: No
- Floating: Will float within scope as needed
- Locals Accepted: Yes, no radius restrictions
- Return to Office Restrictions: Ideally no more than 5 days
Specialty & Skills Requirements
Required Clinical Experience:
- Telemetry, Neuro Stepdown, PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown units
- Cardiac monitoring and emergency response:
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- Telemetry monitoring on unit
- Use of Rapid Response Teams
- Cardiovascular care:
- Post cardiac angiogram, MI, cardiac cath, cardiac surgery
- Sheath removal, TR Band use
- Gastrointestinal: Feeding tube care and management
- Renal/Genitourinary: Pre/post hemodialysis management, renal failure care
- IV therapy/phlebotomy:
- Accessing ports, arterial line management, blood product administration
- Central line and PICC line care/management
- Phlebotomy, peripheral line care, starting IVs
- Medication management:
- Heparin protocols
- Manage cardiac and vasoactive drips (no titration)
- PCA, procedural sedation administration
- Titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
- Neurological/psychiatric cases:
- Craniotomy, CVA, pre/post neurosurgery
- Spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury
- Orthopedics: Ortho trauma, peripheral nerve block catheters, total joint replacements
- Plastic surgery: Skin grafts, surgical drains
- Respiratory care:
- Ventilator care, chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
- External CPAP/BIPAP, high flow nasal cannula (HFNC)
- ABG interpretation, nasal cannula, oxygen masks, portable oxygen tanks
- Non-invasive airway management, tracheostomy management
- Professional skills: Isolation precautions, wound care/wound vac
Preferred Experience:
- Cerner electronic health record system
- Teaching hospital experience
- Level I trauma center experience
Certifications Required
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA (RQI acceptable)
- NIH certification required
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) preferred but not mandatory

- Background checks covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
- Education verification (degree or transcript)
- State-specific criminal and offender registry searches as required by Illinois
- Drug screening (9 panel) within 30 days of start
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, including labs
- Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted)
- Immunizations and/or titers for:
- TB (2-step PPD, TSPOT, or Qgold)
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer)
- Hepatitis B vaccine series or positive titer
- Varicella vaccine or positive titer
- Flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required annually
- Competency exam required for all clinical candidates
- References: 2 professional references required
Prior Travel Experience
- Not accepted for first-time travelers (prior travel experience required)
Summary
This is a travel contract RN position in an acute care, Magnet, Level I trauma hospital in Springfield, IL. The role requires a minimum of 1 year of specialty experience in stepdown/PCU nursing with strong telemetry, cardiac, respiratory, neurological, and IV therapy skills. Prior travel experience is required; first-time travelers will not be considered. The position is night shift with every other weekend work and requires an active Illinois RN license.
