Travel/Contract Registered Nurse (ICU) - Chesapeake, Virginia
Job Overview
- Location: Chesapeake, VA (near Virginia Beach and Norfolk)
- Specialty: Registered Nurse, ICU
- Employment Type: Travel/Contract
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: 3x12 or 4x12 hour shifts (nights, weekdays, every other weekend, float, holidays)
- Overtime: Available after 48 hours on 4x12 shifts
- Patient Populations: Neurosurgical and post-stroke, respiratory failure, renal failure, post-surgical, trauma, sepsis and MODS, heart failure, post-cardiac cath
Required Qualifications
- Valid Virginia or Compact RN license at time of application (no exceptions)
- BLS and ACLS certifications (American Heart Association only)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required (must be current within 1 year and renewed annually)
- EPIC proficiency required
- Strong neuro ICU experience required (post-neurosurgical care, EVD, stroke)
- Skills in ventilator management, IV drip titration, telemetry monitoring, conscious sedation, dysrhythmia and emergency management
- Ability and willingness to float to Stepdown Unit, Emergency Department, and MedSurg units caring for ICU patients
- Patient care ratios: 1:2-3
- Minimum 3 years critical care experience preferred (strong candidates without 3 years may be considered)
- Travel experience preferred but not required
- Must reside more than 50 miles from the facility (local candidates within 50 miles not accepted)
- Driver’s license required for address verification
Prior Travel Experience
- Travel experience preferred but not explicitly required
Background and Screening Requirements
- No license or background hits accepted (zero tolerance policy)
- 7-year criminal background check within 1 year of start, updated annually
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start and updated for renewals
- Fingerprinting required (Virginia VSP National Criminal Background Check) starting 1/1/2026, to be completed within first week of contract
- Proof of diploma or transcript required
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
- Proof of 2 professional references
- Complete employment application/resume
- Unit-specific skills checklist updated annually
- Performance evaluation required if worked with facility 1 year or more
Health and Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, updated annually
- Fit test for N95 mask within 1 year, updated annually (PAPR not allowed)
- Negative TB test (PPD, Quantiferon Gold, or T-spot) within 1 year, annual testing required
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine required for some units, preferred for others (within past 10 years)
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella titers required within 10 years or documented declination/booster as applicable
- Seasonal flu vaccination required annually (or approved exemption with mask requirement)
- COVID-19 vaccine preferred but not required; documentation collected if available
Additional Requirements
- Pass/fail EKG/medication competency testing at orientation (80% minimum, one attempt only)
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam as applicable
- Color blindness testing (100% passing score required; retake allowed once)
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgment required
- Job description and facility-specific documents must be completed
- Photo for badge (passport style, shoulders up, plain background) required before start
This position requires a highly skilled ICU RN with strong neuro experience, current certifications, and the ability to work flexible shifts including floating to other units. Candidates must meet strict background and health screening requirements and be willing to comply with all facility policies.
