Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - Med/Tele Oncology

Location: Jackson, Mississippi
Unit: 5 South Hematology/Oncology
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Work in a Level 1 trauma center on the Hematology/Oncology unit.
  • Care for patients with hematology/oncology diagnoses, including chemotherapy administration (chemo certification NOT required; training provided).
  • Manage lines, chest tubes, and high acuity patients.
  • Use EPIC charting system (experience required).
  • Typical nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5, occasionally up to 1:6, adjusted for higher acuity.
  • Telemetry monitoring on all patients; RNs collaborate with central monitor stations.
  • 12-hour shifts (7a-7p or 7p-7a).
  • Floating within med/surg units expected, with higher acuity patients assigned to core staff.
  • Holiday and weekend coverage required (must work at least 3 of 6 major holiday dates).
  • No call or standby requirements.
  • Dress code: solid color, professional scrubs (any color).

Required Qualifications

  • License: Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Mississippi.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 1 year solid RN experience on first job.
    • At least 1 year experience in a Level 1 trauma center or very large hospital.
    • Experience with hematology/oncology patients preferred but not mandatory.
  • Certifications: BLS required; ACLS required for charge nurses.
  • Skills:
    • Comfortable with lines, chest tubes, and titrating drips (heparin, possibly amiodarone).
    • EPIC charting experience required.
  • Other:
    • Flu vaccine required (medical exemption allowed with documentation).
    • Fingerprint background check required (remote or in-person options).
  • Preferred:
    • Prior travel experience with contract extensions preferred but not required.

Work Environment & Scheduling

  • 12-hour shifts with some flexibility for block scheduling.
  • Weekend requirement: typically every other or two weekends per month.
  • Must work at least 3 of the following holidays: Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day.
  • Nurse managers and educators available during business hours; charge nurses take light patient assignments and can take full load if needed.
  • Respiratory therapy support available for CPAP/BiPAP and high flow oxygen.

  • Unit has 32 beds.
  • Typical patient acuity is high with complex med/surg and oncology needs.
  • Orientation includes paperwork, system logins, unit tour, and 2 additional shifts with a preceptor.
