Registered Nurse - Medical Oncology (Travel/Contract)

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks


Job Overview

  • Rotating 12-hour day/night shifts (12D/N), schedule assessed every 4 weeks
  • Orientation:
    • Week 1: Monday-Friday day shift orientation
    • Week 2: 36 hours on-unit orientation with preceptor
  • Staffing ratios goal: 1:4 (can be 1:5)
  • Variable weekends based on unit needs
  • Self-scheduling requests allowed before final schedule posting
  • Floating required to other MedSurg Oncology units

Patient Population

  • Adults and Geriatrics
  • Common diagnoses include:
    • Breast, Lung, Prostate, Pancreatic, Colon, Esophageal Cancers
    • Patients receiving antineoplastic chemotherapy
  • Unit cares for all solid tumor cancers from diagnosis through treatment and end-of-life care
  • Focus on infection prevention and patient fall prevention
  • Patients may have medical-surgical issues

Required Experience & Skills

  • Valid RN license in Ohio
  • Minimum 2 years of telemetry experience, including telemetry interpretation, with telemetry experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Experience with EPIC electronic charting system
  • BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)

Preferred Certifications

  • ONS Chemotherapy Certification (preferred)

Computer Systems

  • EPIC electronic charting system

Required Background & Compliance Checks

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG monitoring
  • Education accreditation verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
  • Ohio BCI & FBI fingerprinting required within 1 year of start, with specific fingerprinting code
  • Pending background check attestation required if fingerprint results are pending

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, documenting good health and free of contagious disease
  • Immunizations/vaccinations required:
    • Tdap (adult dose)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
    • TB questionnaire in lieu of annual TB test
    • 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers for Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella
    • Hepatitis B titer or 3-vaccine series (declination acceptable)
    • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer (medical exemption allowed with documentation)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (10/1 - 3/31)
  • COVID vaccination not required but strongly recommended

Drug Testing

  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending tests allowed)

Competency & Testing Requirements

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam prior to start
  • Unit-specific competency exam required
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually (with remediation process if failed)

References & Documentation

  • Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership
  • Employment application required, including education verification
  • Skills checklist required

Additional Notes

  • No set/blocked scheduling as permanent staff have
  • Floating to other MedSurg Oncology units expected
  • Heavy emphasis on infection prevention and patient safety
  • Orientation includes both classroom and hands-on preceptor time

This position is ideal for experienced RNs interested in oncology nursing with flexibility in scheduling and a supportive orientation process. Prior travel experience is preferred but not mandatory.
