    Description

    Registered Nurse – Family Birthing Center (Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, Obstetrics)

    Location: Grass Valley, California
    Contract Length: 13 weeks


    Job Description

    Seeking experienced Labor and Delivery nurses for a travel contract in a Family Birthing Center. The unit includes Labor & Delivery (4 beds) and Mother-Baby (8 beds). The role involves caring for standard L&D patients, term and preterm deliveries, couplets, and general GYN patients. Transfers for high-risk mothers (34 weeks and below) are handled by another facility. Approximately 45 deliveries per month.


    Work Schedule & Environment

    • 12-hour night shifts (18:45 – 07:15)
    • Every other weekend required (Friday, Saturday, Sunday nights; Saturday, Sunday days)
    • Holiday rotation: work 2 of the 3 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s) with core staff
    • No self-scheduling; schedules posted 6 weeks in advance
    • Report at bedside; ability to access schedules remotely and trade shifts with staff
    • No floating outside L&D or Mother-Baby units
    • Floor-specific orientation: 2-3 days with preceptor
    • Charge nurse duties included, generally not taking patients but providing break relief
    • Nurse aides not available
    • EMR system: Cerner

    Patient Care & Staffing Ratios

    • L&D nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2, 1:1 during active delivery
    • Mother-Baby nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4 (couplets)
    • 2 RNs and 1 Respiratory Therapist present during every delivery
    • Respiratory Therapist available 24/7
    • Hospitalist or Intensivist on-site during the day; OB and Anesthesia on-call at night
    • Pharmacy available 06:30 – 22:00, on-call pharmacist after hours

    Required Certifications & Licenses

    • Active California RN license
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
    • STABLE certification
    • Advanced AWHONN (Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses) certification, including Advanced Fetal Monitoring (AFM)

    Experience Requirements

    • Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience
    • Must be strong in emergency situations and able to work independently, especially during night shifts with limited resources

    Additional Information

    • Must provide 2 supervisory references (1 within the last 12 months, 1 within the last 3 years)
    • Scrub color provided
    • No telehealth or ventilator care required
    • No IV team support; nurses responsible for IVs
    • Closest higher-level facility approximately 1 hour away

    This opportunity is ideal for experienced L&D nurses comfortable working independently in a smaller hospital setting with a supportive but limited resource environment.
