    Registered Nurse - GI-IR Hybrid

    Location: Folsom, California
    Contract Length: 13 weeks


    Job Overview

    This is a unique hybrid role combining Gastrointestinal (GI) and Interventional Radiology (IR) nursing. The position involves covering IR/procedural sedation in the mornings and GI cases in the afternoons. The role primarily functions as a circulator in GI cases, with preference for candidates who can also tech for GI procedures. No preoperative or recovery duties are required.


    Schedule & Call

    • Shifts: 10-hour shifts on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday
    • Call: GI coverage Monday-Friday 4 PM to 8 AM, and Saturday-Sunday 7 AM to 8 AM (approximately 25 hours/week)
    • Holiday: One holiday shift during the contract if applicable
    • Floating: May be required to float to other units or a sister hospital depending on skillset (possible units include GI, IR, ICU, or ER)

    Caseload

    • GI: 3 cases per day Monday-Thursday; 7-8 cases on Friday
    • IR: 3-7 cases per day depending on focus (if hybrid, generally 3 IR cases/day)
    • Common GI cases: EGDs, colonoscopies, ERCPs, occasional stents and banding for bleeds
    • Common IR cases: dialysis catheters (tunneled), paracentesis, thoracentesis, liver biopsies (basic, non-vascular)

    Required Certifications

    • BLS (AHA)
    • ACLS (AHA)
    • PALS (AHA)
    • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
    • Procedural Sedation Certification (must be obtained during orientation)

    Required Experience & Skills

    • Minimum 1 year of nursing experience
    • If IR-focused only: 1 year experience in IR, ICU, or ER required
    • Strong preference for candidates with knowledge or experience teching for GI cases
    • Ability to cover both GI and IR areas is ideal; candidates with strong IR experience but no GI experience will also be considered
    • Must pass a Dysphagia Exam within 24-48 hours of acceptance (pass/fail with two attempts allowed)

    Job Duties

    • GI: Primarily circulator; tech role preferred if experienced
    • IR: Circulating and procedural sedation
    • No preoperative or recovery responsibilities
    • May assist with scope cleaning on weekends if willing to train

    Orientation & Work Environment

    • Approximately 5 days of unit/department-specific orientation including charting system training
    • Small department with supportive physicians
    • Charge nurse oversees both GI and IR units and does not take patient assignments
    • No dedicated GI techs; RNs perform tech duties in this role
    • IR techs scrub during procedures

    Additional Notes

    • Must provide 2 supervisory references from modality submitting to (one within 12 months, one within 3 years)
    • May be asked to float to ICU or ER depending on skillset
    • Dress code and scrub color provided
