Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Oncology Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- Work on a Hematology Oncology Med/Surg unit with a 12-day/night rotating schedule (days, nights, or combination based on unit needs).
- Shift assignments reviewed every 4 weeks; changes depend on staffing priorities.
- Med/Surg experience required; Hematology Oncology experience preferred but not required.
- Staffing ratios goal: 1:4, can be up to 1:5.
- Weekend shifts vary based on unit needs.
- No set/blocked scheduling; self-schedule requests submitted for consideration.
- Orientation: First week Mon-Fri dayshift; second week includes 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor.
- Floating to other Med/Surg and Oncology units expected.
Patient Diagnoses
- Lymphoma
- Multiple Myeloma
- Acute and Chronic Leukemias
- Sickle Cell Disease
- Other non-hematologic cancers and benign hematology conditions
Special Procedures / Unit Details
- Chemotherapy administration
- Blood transfusions
- IV antibiotics
- Management of oncologic emergencies (tumor lysis syndrome, cytokine release syndrome)
- Insulin and heparin drips
- Strong focus on infection prevention and patient fall prevention
Required Skills & Competencies
- Medical-Surgical and Telemetry nursing skills
- Telemetry monitoring and dysrhythmia interpretation
- Use of Rapid Response Teams
- Feeding tube care and management
- IV therapy and phlebotomy
- Blood product administration
- Central line blood draws and peripheral line care/management
- PICC line management and IV starts
- Computerized charting experience (EPIC preferred)
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
Required Licenses & Experience
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
- Minimum of 1 year Med/Surg nursing experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- PICC line management experience
- Ability to start IVs
- BLS and ACLS certifications issued by the American Heart Association
Background & Compliance Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (must be completed within 1 year of start)
- Education accreditation verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug test within 3 months of start (no pending tests allowed)
- Various monthly and annual background and compliance monitoring (EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start confirming good health and free of contagious disease
- Immunizations and health documentation required:
- Tdap vaccine (adult dose)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers
- Hepatitis B titer or vaccine series (declination acceptable)
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer (medical exemptions reviewed)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination during flu season (mask required if declined)
- Drug testing and immunization requirements apply unless fully remote
Additional Requirements
- Completion of unit-specific competency exams including dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (must be current within 1 year and updated annually)
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam prior to start
- Orientation safety manual acknowledgement annually
- Two professional references required (at least one from a manager or formal leadership)
- Employment application and skills checklist required
Orientation & Scheduling Notes
- Orientation includes classroom and on-unit preceptorship
- Scheduling is flexible but based on unit needs; no guaranteed fixed shifts
- Floating to other related units expected
