Description

Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Med Surg RN - Urology/Nephrology)

Location: Springfield, Illinois
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 - 07:15)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Unit Details:

  • 25-bed unit with an average daily census of 23 patients
  • Acute Care Hospital, Level I trauma center, Magnet designated

Job Responsibilities & Work Environment

  • May work as Charge Nurse as needed
  • Will float within scope to other Medical Surgical units as required
  • Weekend work required every other weekend
  • No on-call requirement
  • Open to block scheduling but not guaranteed
  • Must have active Illinois RN license or be in application process
  • RTO (Return to Office) restrictions ideally no more than 5 days
  • Uses Cerner electronic charting system
  • Scrub color: Any solid color
  • Parking permit required but no cost

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical/Surgical nursing experience, with experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Experience in Charge Nurse roles
  • Use of Rapid Response Teams
  • Clinical skills and experience including:
    • Pre/Post Hemodialysis management
    • Central line blood draws
    • Peripheral line care/management
    • PICC line management
    • Chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
    • High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)
    • Non-invasive airway management
  • Experience with Cerner electronic charting system

Additional Requirements & Compliance

  • Background checks covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years, including SSN trace, national criminal, sex offender, and other federal/state registries
  • Primary source verification of licenses and certifications
  • Competency exam required for clinical candidates
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, including labs within 7 days of contract signing
  • Fit mask test required (specific mask types accepted)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
  • Immunizations or documented immunity required for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Varicella
  • 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually by November 30
  • Badge photo required within one week of contract signing
  • Must complete and sign facility-specific documents including code of conduct and parking permit form

References & Documentation

  • Two professional references required for travel and acute care clinical candidates
  • Education verification required (official or unofficial transcripts accepted if verification pending)

Notes

  • Locals accepted with no radius restrictions
  • Candidate may be called off up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment without pay for those hours
  • Fingerprinting must be completed in Illinois for candidates without an IL state license providing direct care
  • No prior travel experience required; first-time travelers accepted with solid RN foundation

This position is ideal for experienced Med Surg RNs with telemetry and renal/urology skills seeking a night shift travel assignment in an acute care, Magnet-designated hospital setting.
