Description

Registered Nurse (MedSurg) - Florida

Location

  • Marianna, Florida (small community hospital, ~88 beds licensed, 28-bed MedSurg unit)
  • Near Panama City Beach and Tallahassee

Position Details

  • Specialty: MedSurg RN
  • Shift: Nights (7pm - 7am), 12-hour shifts
  • Contract length: 13 weeks
  • Schedule: 8 on / 6 off, Friday to Friday, 72 hours guaranteed every 2 weeks
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday), with flexibility for more weekends
  • Floating: Required to float to PCU; assignments limited to skill set if no PCU experience
  • No float outside MedSurg/PCU except as noted
  • Possible call duties

Unit Information

  • MedSurg/Telemetry & PCU combined unit (PCU currently ICU overflow due to COVID)
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: Typically 1:6, rarely 1:7; PCU ratio 1:4 when normal
  • Charge nurse coverage: Days usually have charge nurse; evenings sometimes; nights have senior nurse instead
  • Nurse aides (PCTs): Usually 4 PCTs per 24 patients
  • Telemetry: Monitored remotely in ICU; MedSurg nurses do not interpret strips
  • Drips: Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone titrated per protocol but rarely assigned to travelers without prior drip experience
  • Ventilation: Occasional CPAP, BiPAP, or High Flow O2; RT manages vents 24/7 but vents not typical on this unit
  • IV Team: None; PICC & Midline certified staff assist with difficult IVs
  • Pharmacy: Not 24/7; uses Omnicell dispensing system
  • EMR: CPSI - Evident Thrive (user-friendly)
  • Equipment: Baxter Sigma IV pumps, Neon Kohden cardiac monitors

Orientation & Training

  • General orientation: 1 day plus pre-orientation packet with policies/procedures
  • Floor-specific orientation: 1 shift shadowing charge nurse and floor nurse for charting, admissions, discharges, medication scanning, and routine tasks

Required Qualifications

  • Florida RN license
  • BLS certification (required)
  • ACLS and PALS certifications preferred but not required
  • Minimum 1 year MedSurg specialty experience plus some prior travel experience (total 15-18 months experience recommended)
  • Experience with drips preferred if assigned patients with drips

  • Non-trauma hospital
  • Teaching facility with medical and nursing students

  • Cafeteria open 7am - 6pm, managed by a restaurant chain (quality food)
  • Scrub color: Navy preferred; black or gray acceptable

Additional Notes

  • Clocking in/out via hospital system required; time cards must be signed by supervisors and sent to recruiter
  • Housing available nearby for approximately $200/week
  • Hospitalist or intensivist not in-house; ER physician available 24/7 for emergencies; physician groups cover patients after hours with on-call coverage for family practice, internal medicine, and surgery
