Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Med Surg RN - Urology/Nephrology) - Travel/Contract
Location: Springfield, Illinois
Shift: Day shift, 6:45 AM – 7:15 PM (3x12 hour shifts)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Details:
- 25-bed unit with an average daily census of 23 patients
- Acute Care Hospital, Level I trauma center, Magnet designated
- Charting system: Cerner
Job Description
- Provide nursing care on a Medical Surgical unit specializing in Urology and Nephrology
- Float within scope to other Medical Surgical units as needed
- Work every other weekend
- No on-call required
- Open to block scheduling but not guaranteed
- Locals accepted with no radius restrictions
- Must have active Illinois RN license (no pending licenses accepted)
- Required to have no more than 5 days of Return to Office (RTO) restrictions ideally
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois
- Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical and Telemetry nursing experience, with experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Experience with use of Rapid Response Teams
- Clinical competencies in:
- Pre- and post-hemodialysis management
- Renal failure case management
- Central line blood draws and PICC line management
- Chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
- CPAP/BiPAP management
- High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) use
- Non-invasive airway management
- Portable oxygen tank use
- Experience with Cerner electronic health record system
Work Environment and Expectations
- Acute care hospital setting with 562 staffed beds
- Scrub color: any solid color scrubs allowed
- Parking permit required but no cost for parking
- Badge photo required before start (color photo, mid-shoulders up, plain background)
- Must be able to perform core functions of the position without restrictions
Health and Background Requirements
- Physical exam within one year of start, including labs within 7 days of contract signing
- Fit mask test required (3M 1860 small/regular, 1870, or 1870+ masks acceptable)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within one year of start
- Required immunizations or proof of immunity (MMR, Hepatitis B, Varicella) or signed declinations
- 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually by November 30
- Background checks including national and state-specific criminal and sex offender registry searches within 30 days of start
- Illinois Department of Corrections and Most Wanted searches required within 30 days of start
- Fingerprinting and Illinois Healthcare Worker Registry results required for clinical candidates without an active Illinois license (must be done in Illinois)
- Education verification and competency exams required

- Candidate must review and sign facility-specific code of conduct and parking permit forms within 7 days of contract signing
- Facility accommodates latex allergies
- No guaranteed hours if client cancels shifts; client may call off up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment without penalty
This position is ideal for experienced Med Surg RNs with strong clinical skills in Urology/Nephrology and telemetry who are comfortable working in a fast-paced acute care hospital environment. First-time travel nurses with solid Med Surg experience are welcome.
