Description
Registered Nurse – Family Birthing Center (Labor & Delivery, Mother/Baby)
Location: Folsom, California
Contract Length: 12 weeks
Shift: Days
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
Job Overview
Seeking experienced Labor and Delivery (L&D) nurses for a travel contract in a Family Birthing Center setting. The unit includes Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum (LDRP) beds, an OR suite for C-sections, and a NICU with 2 stabilization beds. The unit averages 70-80 births per month and performs antepartum testing.
Patient Population & Care
- Care for patients 35 weeks gestation and above; preterm patients under 35 weeks are transferred to higher-level care.
- May assist with twin deliveries.
- No in-house pediatric coverage; RN must be comfortable performing Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) at delivery.
- Nurses titrate drips such as Pitocin and occasionally insulin.
- Neonatologist and OB physician coverage is in-house 24/7.
- Anesthesia is on-call with a 20-minute response time unless epidural patients are present, in which case anesthesia remains in-house.
- Respiratory Therapist attends every delivery and manages respiratory equipment (ventilators, CPAP, bubble CPAP).
Staffing & Unit Details
- Nurse-to-patient ratios: Labor 1:2, 1:1 during delivery, Mother/Baby couplets 1:4.
- Charge nurse or nurse shift manager present on every shift; may take patient assignments if needed.
- No CNAs on unit; one OB Tech scheduled each shift.
- No Telemetry/Monitor Techs; nurses monitor fetal heart rhythms using GE fetal monitors and use the Fetalink electronic fetal monitoring system.
- Patients receiving general anesthesia are recovered in the main PACU.
- Weekend requirement: 2 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule (Friday/Saturday nights, Saturday/Sunday days).
- Holiday shifts rotate with core staff.
- May be placed on-call/standby during scheduled shifts with a 30-minute callback expectation.
- Floating required to other Sacramento area facilities.
- Scheduling provided 4 weeks in advance; every other weekend off.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in California
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience, including at least 1 year in Labor Delivery Recovery & Postpartum (LDRP) settings
- Labor and Delivery experience within the last year
- Experience with OR circulating for Labor and Delivery
- Certifications required:
- BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring (Adv EFM)
Additional Notes
- Candidates may not have been employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any facility associated with a specific large health system within the last 12 months.
- The unit follows AWHONN guidelines for staffing ratios but does not strictly adhere to them.
- Nurses are expected to "catch the baby" during deliveries.
This position is ideal for RNs with solid Labor and Delivery experience who are comfortable managing deliveries, neonatal resuscitation, and working in a fast-paced Family Birthing Center environment.
