    Description

    Registered Nurse – Family Birthing Center (Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, OB)

    Location: Sacramento, California
    Contract Length: 13 weeks
    Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts, starting at 6:45 PM)
    Hours per Week: 36


    Unit Overview

    • Family Birthing Center includes Labor & Delivery (L&D), Postpartum (PP), and OB (LDRP) care
    • 10 L&D beds, 2 OR suites for C-sections, 3 triage beds (OB-ED), 3 antepartum testing beds (used for OB ED overflow), and 12 postpartum beds
    • Approximately 140-165 births per month
    • High-risk unit with couplet care; nurses must manage all aspects from start to finish
    • Must be able to float to Maternal Baby (MB) unit and circulate C-sections
    • Charge nurse/house supervisor role available; generally does not take patients but provides break relief
    • OB surgical techs available on unit
    • OB hospitalist on-site 24/7; Neonatologist on call 24/7 and rounds daily; Anesthesia in house 24/7
    • No respiratory therapy equipment (vents, CPAP, BiPAP) on unit
    • Nurses must read and interpret EKG strips on mothers in PACU
    • Electronic Fetal Monitoring system: GE Corometric monitors with Fetalink surveillance
    • Nurse-to-patient ratios follow AWHONN guidelines:
      • Couplet care: 1:3-4
      • Labor & Delivery: 1:1 to 1:2
      • Antepartum: 1:1 to 1:3

    Required Certifications & Licenses

    • Active California RN license
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
    • AWHONN Advanced certification
    • STABLE certification preferred

    Experience & Skills

    • Minimum 2 years of Labor & Delivery nursing experience required
    • Must be comfortable circulating C-sections and managing high-risk OB patients
    • Ability to titrate drips, including Pitocin
    • Must be willing and able to float to other Sacramento area facilities if needed (mid-shift float is rare)
    • Must be able to perform couplet care (mother and baby)
    • Baby Catcher role (NRP) may be assigned for entire shift, sometimes filled by NICU or L&D staff depending on availability

    Additional Information

    • Candidates may not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by certain affiliated health systems within the past year; PRN employment through outside firms is acceptable
    • Two supervisory references required at time of submission (one within past 12 months, one within past 3 years)
    • Copy of driver’s license required at submission to validate legal name
    • Scrubs provided
    • Shift report is bedside; overtime and extra shifts available
    • On-call response time: 30 minutes
    • Floating to other Sacramento facilities possible but no in-house floating
