Description
Registered Nurse – Cardio Thoracic Unit
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Department: Cardio Thoracic
- Unit Size: 70 beds
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Days: 1:4-5
- Nights: 1:5-6
- Patient Types: MI, CHF, A fib, COPD, pacemaker/AICD placement, lung surgeries (including chest tubes, esophagectomy not fresh from PACU), general medical overflow
- Support Staff:
- Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) with ratios:
- Days: 1:8-9
- Evenings: 1:9-10
- Nights: 1:10-12
- Telemetry/Monitor Techs present; nurses must read and interpret telemetry strips (Phillips monitors)
- 24/7 Charge Nurse (rarely takes patient assignments) and House Supervisor
Schedule & Shifts
- Shift Length: 12 hours
- Shift Times:
- Days: 07:00 – 19:30
- Nights: 19:00 – 07:30
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Days: Saturday/Sunday
- Nights: Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday
- Holiday Rotation Required:
- Days: Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day
- Nights: Memorial Day Eve, July 3rd, Labor Day Eve, Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve
- No call or standby requirement currently
- Floating: Required to float to other general medical units
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Licensure: Active Illinois RN license or proof that application process has been initiated
- Certifications: BLS required; ACLS recommended
- Experience/Skills:
- EKG interpretation
- Medication titration (including Cardizem and heparin drips)
- Basic nursing skills
- RN Responsibilities:
- Titrate drips as needed
- Read and interpret telemetry strips
- Troubleshoot respiratory equipment (CPAP, BiPAP if patient’s home regimen, heated high flow in special COVID cases)
Orientation & Policies
- Orientation: Typically 1 shift or part of one; may vary if previously worked at the facility
- Drug-Free Workplace: Negative drug screen required for all panels
- Dress Code: Scrubs of any color allowed except children/cartoon prints (adult unit)
- Call Off Policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty or pay requirement
- Non-billable Orientation Hours: 12 hours (guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation)

- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
