Registered Nurse – Family Birthing Center (Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, Obstetrics)

Location: Grass Valley, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Overview

Seeking experienced Labor and Delivery nurses for a travel contract in a Family Birthing Center. The unit includes Labor & Delivery (4 beds) and Mother-Baby (8 beds). Approximately 45 deliveries per month, including term, preterm, and couplets. Transfers for mothers under 34 weeks gestation. No high-risk patients. General gynecology patients also cared for.

Work Schedule & Environment

• Shift: Nights (18:45 – 07:15)
• Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Fri, Sat, Sun nights; Sat, Sun days)
• Holiday Requirement: Rotate working 2 of the 3 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s) with core staff; holiday time off considered but not guaranteed
• Staffing Ratios:

  • Labor & Delivery: 1:2 ratio, 1:1 during active delivery
  • Mother-Baby: 1:4 couplets
• Charge Nurse Role: Yes, generally does not take patients but provides break relief
• Floating: No floating; responsible only for Labor & Delivery or Mother-Baby
• Orientation: 2–3 days floor-specific orientation with a preceptor
• EMR System: Cerner
• Report: Bedside report
• Scheduling: Posted 6 weeks in advance; no self-scheduling; travelers can make themselves available for extra shifts and trade shifts with staff
• Scrub Color: Provided

Clinical Environment & Support

• Respiratory Therapist: 24/7 coverage
• Pharmacy: On-site 06:30–22:00; on-call pharmacist available after hours
• Hospitalist/Intensivist: In-house during the day; OB and anesthesia on-call at night
• IV Team: Not available
• Nurse Aides: Not available
• Tele: Not applicable
• Ventilators: Not applicable

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of Labor & Delivery nursing experience
• Active California RN license
• Certifications:

  • BLS (AHA)
  • ACLS
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • Advanced AWHONN (including Advanced Fetal Monitoring)
• STABLE certification preferred
• Must provide 2 supervisory references (1 within last 12 months, 1 within last 3 years)
• Ability to work independently and respond effectively in emergencies, especially during night shifts with limited resources

Additional Notes

• The facility is approximately 1 hour from the closest sister hospital
• Nurses work with 2 RNs and 1 RT during every delivery
• No high-risk deliveries; transfers occur for mothers less than 34 weeks gestation
• Newborns may require IV antibiotics and/or short-term oxygen support

This position is ideal for experienced Labor & Delivery nurses comfortable working nights, weekends, and holidays in a moderately busy family birthing center with a supportive but limited resource environment during night shifts.
