Registered Nurse - Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum
Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Facility: Saint Lukes North Hospital (BJC HealthCare)
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Unit: Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum (LDRP)
- Ratios: 1 nurse to 1-3 patients
- Experience Required: Minimum 3 years, community hospital experience preferred
- First-timers: Not accepted
- Weekend Requirement: 4-6 weekend shifts (Saturday/Sunday) plus 2 Fridays per 6-week schedule
- Holiday Requirement: 1 major holiday (Thanksgiving or Christmas) and 1-2 minor holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, or Labor Day)
- On-call: Yes, 2 mandatory on-call shifts per 6-week schedule
- Floating: RN expected to care for any patient assignment within the LDRP unit (antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, triage, c-section including circulating)
- Block Schedule: Not accommodated
- Locals: Not accepted (must live at least 50 miles from facility)
- Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: No more than 7 days off
- Guaranteed Hours: 3 shifts per 13 weeks
Required Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- FHM (Fetal Heart Monitoring)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) preferred
- AWHONN Advanced or Intermediate preferred
- EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring) certification required if applicable

IV Therapy/Phlebotomy:
- Administration of blood & blood products
- Drawing venous blood
- Starting and maintaining peripheral IVs
- Use of infusion pumps, drips, and IV monitoring
Labor and Delivery Management:
- Amnioinfusion
- Assisting with vaginal delivery
- Circulating for C-section
- Forceps/vacuum extraction
- Managing hemorrhage/shock

Fetal Monitoring:
- Recognition and treatment of abnormal fetal heart rate patterns
- Spiral electrode placement
- Use of internal fetal monitoring and intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC) placement and calibration
Preferred Skills
- Assist with high-risk deliveries
- Scrub for C-sections
- Medication administration: anticoagulants, anticonvulsants
- Neonatal resuscitation and APGAR scoring
- Use of radiant warmers and thermoregulation in newborns

- Fit mask test (N95) required and must be renewed annually
- Various facility-specific documents and policies to review and sign prior to start (HIPAA, confidentiality, hand hygiene, dress code, latex allergy, etc.)
- Unit-specific competency exams and medication/pharmacology competency tests
- Skills checklist within 1 year of start
This position requires a highly skilled and experienced RN with strong labor and delivery expertise, capable of managing a full spectrum of antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care in a community hospital setting. The role demands flexibility for weekend, holiday, and on-call shifts, with full couplet care responsibilities and the ability to float within the LDRP unit.
