Job Opportunity: Float Pool Nurse (ICU/MedSurg Tele/PCU)
Location: Prescott, Arizona
Facility: Yavapai Regional Medical Center
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit/Department Overview
- Float Pool Units: ICU, MedSurg Telemetry, PCU across both East and West campuses, including inpatient holding in the ED.
- Campuses:
- East Campus (Campus 2) includes NextCare (10-bed double occupancy with ICU and stepdown patients)
- West Campus Stepdown (14 rooms, double occupancy)
- West MedSurg Tele (95 beds divided into 4 areas)
- MedSurg broken into 10-room pods, double occupancy
- Average Census: Approximately 20 patients in stepdown units
Patient Care & Ratios
- Nurse:Patient Ratios:
- PCU: 1:4
- MedSurg Telemetry: 1:5-6
- Common Patient Types:
- Geriatric patients
- Orthopedic patients
- Post-procedural cardiac patients (post MI, post cardiac cath, CABG post-op day 3-4)
- Patients with groin sites in stepdown unit (cath lab program)
Required Experience & Skills
- Minimum 1 year ICU experience required
- Must be comfortable titrating drips including: Heparin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Insulin
- RNs are required to titrate drips
- Ability to interpret cardiac monitor strips (nurses read strips; monitor techs present on PCU and MedSurg Tele)
Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- Must pass dysrhythmia exam with at least 80% within two attempts prior to contract signing
Staffing & Scheduling
- Shifts: 7 AM - 7 PM (AM and PM shifts)
- Scheduling: Made by float pool scheduler, published 6 weeks in advance for 4 weeks at a time
- Night shift may allow block scheduling
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday requirement: Travelers included in permanent staff rotation
- Call/Standby: Yes, travelers may be placed on standby during shifts with potential to be called in
- Unit assignments communicated by text message 2 hours prior to shift start
- Distance between campuses: 20-25 minutes
Orientation
- 8-hour general hospital orientation day
- 12-hour shift orientation at West MedSurg Tele and PCU
- East campus orientation similar but smaller and easier to navigate
Additional Information
- Radius Rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and may not have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN at any CommonSpirit facility (including CHI or Dignity) within the past year
- Charge nurses present on each unit but do not take patient assignments
- Nurse aides utilized in all settings
- Respiratory Therapy equipment used includes CPAP, BiPAP, and Heated High Flow (especially in PCU and MedSurg)
- Dress code: Currently solid color professional scrubs; transitioning to navy scrubs aligning with Dignity guidelines in October
This position is ideal for experienced ICU nurses comfortable with critical care drips, telemetry monitoring, and flexible float pool assignments across multiple units.
