Surgical Acute - Tower 8

Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Facility: St Josephs Hospital and Medical Center


Facility Overview

  • 607-bed tertiary care center
  • Nationally recognized for quality care, medical education, and research
  • Specialties include lung, liver, and kidney transplants
  • Affiliated with Barrow Neuro Institute (world’s #1 neuro institute)
  • Teaching hospital with nursing students

Unit Details: Tower 8 (Trauma, Ortho, Surgical)

  • Unit size: 30 beds
  • Patient types: Post-op transplant day 1, Whipples, spine, ortho joints, trauma
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4-5
  • Charge Nurse: Does not take patients
  • Nurse Aides: 2 on days, 1 on nights
  • Weekend requirement: 3 shifts per 4 weeks
  • Holiday shifts: Included in permanent staff rotation
  • Shift length: 12 hours (including nights)
  • Scrub color: Navy
  • Floating assignments: Observation, VMU, T6, T5, 6N, 5N MedSurg, all MS and Tele units
  • Floor-specific orientation: 2 shifts

Clinical Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years of core Telemetry experience
  • Level 1 Trauma experience required
  • ACLS and BLS certifications required
  • Cerner EMR experience required (especially for ED)
  • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts)
  • Must pass Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab (Foley catheter insertion & central line dressing changes; exceptions for NyICU & ED)
  • Must be competent in sterile field maintenance
  • Previous travel experience required for ED, Neuro ICU
  • Travel teams must have their own vehicles
  • No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed
  • Men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
  • Must not have worked for CommonSpirit as permanent staff within the last 12 months to qualify for travel assignment
  • Cannot hold multiple contracts simultaneously with Dignity AZ

Orientation & Onboarding

  • Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holiday weeks)
  • Onboarding paperwork must be completed by 1pm CST Wednesday before start date; incomplete files will delay start
  • Floor-specific orientation: 2 shifts
  • Day 1 pass/fail exam during orientation

Additional Notes

  • Parking assigned with shuttle service to facility (night shift parking in garage)
  • Respiratory Therapy and Pharmacy available 24/7
  • IV Team (SWAT RN) available
  • Ventilators: BiPAP, CPAP
  • Large transplant and Whipple surgery patient population
  • Contract length minimum: 13 weeks (interpreted as 13 weeks)
  • Weekend shifts: 4 total per 4 weeks, including 2 out of 4 major holidays

Summary

This is a 13-week minimum travel nursing assignment on a Level 1 Trauma, Surgical Acute unit at a large, nationally recognized teaching hospital with a strong transplant program. Candidates must have solid telemetry experience, trauma exposure, Cerner EMR skills, and pass required clinical exams and orientation labs. Strict appearance and onboarding policies apply.
