Neuro Acute Epilepsy Monitoring RN - 6N
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Facility: St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center
Facility Overview
- 607-bed tertiary care hospital
- Nationally recognized for quality care, medical education, and research
- Specialty programs: Lung, Liver, Kidney Transplants
- Affiliated with Barrow Neuro Institute (world’s #1 neuro institute)
- Teaching hospital with nursing students
Unit Details
- Unit: Neuro Acute 6NNA/B
- Total beds: 48 (including 10 epilepsy specialty rooms)
- Patient types: Epilepsy, brain tumors, subdural hematoma, scoliosis surgeries, traumatic brain injury (TBI), neuro diagnoses
- Common procedures: 24-48 hour Trend EEGs
- Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4 (days and nights)
- Charge nurse present (no patient assignment)
- Resource RN available day and night
- Nurse aides (PCT): 1-2 on days, 1 at night
- Respiratory Therapy (RT) available 24/7; manages BiPAP and vents
- Pharmacy available 24/7
- Hospitalist or Intensivist present during day shifts
Shift & Scheduling
- Shift length: 12 hours (7am-7pm)
- Weekend requirement: 3 shifts per 4-week period, self-scheduled
- Holiday requirement: Work 2 out of 4 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's)
- Scrub color: Grey’s Anatomy / Steel
- Floating: Possible to Med Surg/Telemetry floors
- Floor-specific orientation: 2 shifts on the unit
Experience & Certification Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of CORE experience in specialty submitted
- Level 1 Trauma experience required
- Teaching hospital experience required
- Cerner EMR experience required (especially for ED)
- ACLS and BLS certifications required
- BSN preferred; Med Surg/Telemetry certification preferred
- Previous travel experience required for ED, Neuro ICU
- Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts)
- Must pass Day 1 pass/fail SIMs Lab (Foley catheter insertion & central line dressing changes)
- Strong critical thinking and assessment skills required, including cranial nerve assessment training
- Must be competent in sterile field maintenance
Additional Requirements & Notes
- No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed
- Men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
- Travelers must have their own vehicle (travel teams)
- Cannot hold concurrent contracts with Dignity AZ
- Must have been off CommonSpirit permanent staff for 12 months to qualify for travel assignment
- 50-mile radius rule applies (driver’s license is source of truth)
- Orientation: Weekly on Mondays (except holidays)
- Must complete onboarding paperwork by Wednesday 1pm CST before start date (no exceptions)
- Pass/fail exam on Day 1 of orientation
- SIMs Lab failures have resulted in termination; sterile technique is critical
- Dysrhythmia exam failure results in 6-month disqualification within CommonSpirit AZ and Sacramento region
- Unit uses self-releasing Velcro seat belts (not restraints)
Contract Length
- Minimum contract length: 13 weeks
This position is ideal for experienced Neuro Acute care RNs with strong critical thinking skills, trauma and teaching hospital experience, and proficiency in Cerner EMR. The role requires adherence to strict facility policies and successful completion of required exams and orientation.
