Travel RN Opportunity – Research Psychiatric Center, Kansas City, MO

Unit Information

• Units: ADOL, Serenity, ITU, SRAD, VINE
• Number of Beds:

  • ADOL: 18 beds (patients aged 12-18)
  • Serenity: 24 beds (lower acuity adult unit)
  • ITU: 32 beds (higher acuity adult unit, patients with thought disorders)
  • SRAD: 16 beds (senior lifestyle patients)
  • VINE: 9 beds (lower acuity adult unit)
• Patient Ratios:

  • Nurses: 8:1
  • Mental Health Technicians (MHTs): 12:1
• Scheduling:

  • Coverage required for three 12-hour shifts daily, 7 days a week (including weekends)
  • Days off are not guaranteed unless specified in the contract
• Floating Policy: Floating to units with greatest need
• Documentation System: Meditech
• Dress Code: Nurses wear blue uniforms; MHTs wear green or black

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) – Active Blue Card required to submit

Job Responsibilities & Skills

• Mental Health Assessment: Ability to assess patients’ mental health status, recognize psychiatric disorders, substance use, and behavioral problems through patient histories, observation, and diagnostic tools
• Care Planning: Develop individualized care plans, set goals, implement interventions, and evaluate outcomes for patients with mental health and behavioral issues
• Medication Management: Administer psychiatric medications and monitor for side effects or adverse reactions; knowledge of psychotropic medications required
• Crisis Intervention: Provide immediate, short-term support to patients in crisis (e.g., suicidal ideation, aggression) using de-escalation techniques and appropriate medication management
• Therapeutic Communication: Build trust and rapport with patients through effective communication, active listening, and empathy
• Monitoring: Observe patients for physical and psychological symptoms, including vital signs, mental status changes, and medication effects
