Labor & Delivery Nurse - St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, Phoenix, AZ

Facility Overview

  • 607-bed tertiary care center known for quality medical education and research.
  • Specialties include lung, liver, and kidney transplants.
  • Affiliated with Barrow Neuro Institute (#1 neuro institute).
  • Teaching hospital with nursing students present.

Unit Details

  • Unit: Labor Care
  • Beds: 17 LDR, 8 high risk, 4 OR, 4 PACU, 8 Triage, 15 Antecare
  • Births: ~300 per month, ~3800 per year
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios:
    • LDR: 1:1 during active delivery, 1:2 during labor
    • Antecare: 1:4
  • RN follows patient to OR and PACU
  • Charge Nurse oversees all areas, usually no patient assignment
  • Nurse aides (PCTs) in antenatal and LDR
  • Shifts: 12-hour (7am-7pm), including nights
  • Weekend requirement: 2 weekends per month
  • Holidays: Work included in rotation
  • Scrubs provided
  • Floating: Within OB arena
  • Floor-specific orientation: 2 days
  • Common diagnoses: multiples, preterm labor, OB trauma response
  • RNs also circulate and recover in PACU

Clinical Requirements & Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of Labor & Delivery experience required
  • Level I Trauma experience required
  • 2 years of core specialty experience required
  • Travel experience preferred but first-time travelers considered
  • Must have experience with Cerner EMR
  • ACLS, BLS, NRP, Fetal Monitoring Certification required
  • Must be competent in Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (SIMs Lab pass/fail on Day 1)
  • Must be able to titrate drips (oxytocin, magnesium sulfate)
  • Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam required 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (for certain units)
  • No facial piercings and only natural hair colors allowed

Orientation & Onboarding

  • Weekly orientations on Mondays (except holidays)
  • Onboarding paperwork due by Wednesday 1pm CST before start date; incomplete files delay start
  • 2-day floor-specific orientation
  • Pass/fail SIMs Lab on Day 1 for key nursing skills

Work Environment & Policies

  • Cannot hold concurrent contracts with Dignity AZ or CommonSpirit facilities
  • Must have been off CommonSpirit as permanent staff for 12 months to qualify
  • No contract shorter than 13 weeks accepted (contract length: 13 weeks)
  • Parking assigned with shuttle service; night shift parking in garage
  • No call required
  • Telemetry system: Phillips
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring system: FetaLink
  • Respiratory therapy available 24/7, but no vents in L&D
  • OB/Neonatologist and anesthesia available 24/7

Additional Notes

  • Travelers must have their own vehicle
  • Cath Lab does not accept tech/RN teams
  • Facility expects high competency in sterile technique and nursing skills
  • Nurses may be expected to work across multiple OB areas (floating)
  • No local rates; 50-mile radius policy applies
