Job Opportunity: MST / Pediatrics Nurse

Location: Prescott Valley, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Overview

  • Mixed unit caring for both adult and pediatric patients (MST/Pediatrics).
  • Patient ratio varies; sometimes more adults than pediatric patients.
  • Must be willing to care for both adult and pediatric patients.
  • Float to MST unit on Emergency Center to care for adult MST patients if pediatric/MST census is low.
  • Unit size: 10 beds.

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • Surgical: total hip & knee replacement, small bowel resection, hysterectomy, exploratory laparoscopy.
  • Medical: MRSA, C-diff infections, COPD, pneumonia, COVID-19.
  • Telemetry: chest pain patients.
  • Pediatrics: respiratory illnesses (RSV, Influenza, COVID), chronic seizures, dehydration, appendectomy, failure to thrive (med surg level).
  • No feeding tubes, tracheostomies, or ventilators on pediatric patients; assist to stabilize for transfer if needed.

Staffing & Ratios

  • Pediatric nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:3-4
  • MST nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5
  • Nurse aides (NAs) care for 10 patients; if no NA, RN cares for 3 patients and provides primary care.
  • Charge RN oversees 50 inpatient beds including MST, Pediatrics, and Acuity Adaptable MCU unit.

Certifications & Requirements

  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS.
  • Must pass dysrhythmia exam within two attempts prior to contract signing (minimum 80% score). Failure results in 6-month disqualification from certain facilities.
  • Experience working with children is required. Must also be comfortable caring for adults.
  • No requirement for RNs to titrate drips.

Telemetry & Equipment

  • Telemetry monitoring for adult MST patients; RNs must be able to read telemetry strips. Remote Monitor Techs available.
  • Pediatric patients monitored with bedside monitors.
  • Respiratory therapy equipment: administer high flow oxygen to stabilize for transfer; care for stable adults needing BiPAP for chronic conditions.

Scheduling & Shifts

  • 12-hour shifts: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM or 7:30 PM – 7:30 AM.
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Friday & Saturday nights; Saturday & Sunday days).
  • Holiday rotation to distribute holidays fairly.
  • Call/standby: staff rotate standby shifts if census is low.

Floating & Cross-Training

  • Float to MCU or MST units to care for adult MST patients.
  • Cross-train and float to birthing unit to care for mom-baby couplets.
  • May float to Labor and Delivery if experienced.
  • No floating to west campus.

Additional Notes

  • Dress code: Navy scrubs.
  • Orientation: hospital and unit-specific orientation based on experience, including pediatrics and adult MST telemetry.
  • Radius rule: candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN at any CommonSpirit-associated facility in the past year.

This position is ideal for nurses with pediatric experience who are comfortable managing a mixed adult and pediatric patient population in a telemetry setting.
