Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Opportunity
Location: Chesapeake, Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Position requires strong neuro experience (post-neurosurgical, EVD, stroke care).
- Must be willing to float to Stepdown Unit; may also float to ED/MedSurg for ICU patient care.
- Patient populations include:
- Neurosurgical and post-stroke
- Respiratory failure
- Renal failure
- Post-surgical
- Trauma
- Sepsis and MODS
- Heart failure and post-cardiac cath
Schedule
- Options: 3x12 or 4x12 hour shifts (nights, weekdays, every other weekend, float, holidays)
- Overtime billed after 48 hours on 4x12 schedule
- 48-hour contract with OT after 48 hours available
Licensure & Certifications
- Must have VA or Compact RN license at time of application (no exceptions)
- BLS and ACLS (American Heart Association) required
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required
- EPIC proficiency required (no exceptions)
Experience & Skills
- Strong neuro experience required: post-neurosurgical care, EVD management, stroke care
- Skills in ventilator management, IV drip titration, telemetry monitoring, conscious sedation, dysrhythmia and emergency management
- Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:2-3
- 3 years critical care experience preferred (strong candidates without 3 years may be considered)
- Travel experience preferred
Requirements & Restrictions
- No license or background hits allowed
- Candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility will not be accepted
- Valid driver’s license required for address verification before offer acceptance
Patient Care Environment
- Float between ICU, Stepdown, ED, and MedSurg units as needed
- Care for complex patients including neuro, cardiac, respiratory, trauma, and sepsis cases
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Background checks: 7-year criminal check within 1 year of start, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG checks updated every contract renewal
- Physical exam within 1 year, updated annually
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, with additional requirements if history of positive TB
- Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
- Immunizations and titers required within 10 years or declination accepted for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B
- Varicella
- Tdap vaccine required for select units (Mother Baby, L&D, Nursery, ER), preferred for others
- Fit test for N95 mask required annually (PAPR not allowed)
- Seasonal flu vaccination required or approved exemption (mask required if exempt)
- COVID-19 vaccination preferred but not required
Testing & Competencies
- Pass/fail EKG/medication competency testing required for all RNs (except Mother-Baby/Couplet Care/Postpartum)
- Medication/pharmacology competency exams as applicable
- Color blindness testing with 100% passing score required
- Unit-specific skills checklist updated annually
Additional Notes
- Must complete facility-specific documents including photo for badge, job description acknowledgment, and safety manual acknowledgment
- Fingerprinting required for certain units with specific procedures and deadlines
- References: Proof of 2 references required
- Performance evaluation required if previously worked at the facility for 1 year or more
- Complete employment application/resume required
This position is ideal for experienced critical care RNs with strong neurological skills who are comfortable floating across multiple units and meeting rigorous licensure and compliance standards.
